Course Description

During critical incidents, the initial moments often prove decisive in determining whether a situation will be resolved or escalate. Law enforcement officers frequently encounter high-stakes scenarios involving suicidal individuals, barricaded subjects, and active hostage situations. These emotionally intense and dangerous encounters demand skilled response, yet specialized crisis negotiation teams are not always immediately available—particularly in rural communities or large-scale events where response times may be significantly delayed.

When dedicated negotiators cannot quickly arrive on scene, the initial responsibility for managing the crisis and stabilizing the situation typically falls to patrol officers, correctional staff, school resource officers, dispatchers, and front-line supervisors. This course equips these first responders with the essential knowledge and skills to effectively manage critical incidents before crisis negotiation specialists take command.

Taught by an experienced law enforcement negotiator with extensive practical experience, this seminar focuses on communication techniques and evidence-based strategies proven to de-escalate situations and facilitate resolution. Participants will gain practical tools applicable to their roles in law enforcement and corrections, learning how strategic communication can reduce the likelihood of crisis escalation and improve outcomes for all involved.
