Dirigo Safety offers a comprehensive Crime Scene Processing course that equips participants with essential knowledge and hands-on capabilities for documenting, securing, collecting, preserving, and packaging physical evidence at crime scenes. Throughout the program, students learn and apply established best practices while adhering to Maine Rules of Evidence during both classroom sessions and practical exercises.

This training is tailored for newly assigned investigators and patrol officers who wish to develop competency in evidence handling and advance toward careers in crime scene management. Participants may purchase a complete evidence collection kit (valued at $350) to support proper evidence management and collection techniques. Full participation requires all attendees to have an evidence kit available during the course.

Course Objectives:

  • Clarify the duties and responsibilities of first responders and the collaborative relationship with investigators, with emphasis on crime scene oversight
  • Execute appropriate techniques for securing and protecting crime scenes to prevent contamination, loss, or destruction of physical evidence
  • Implement systematic search procedures applicable to diverse scene types and investigative situations
  • Record crime scenes using written documentation, video and photographic evidence, hand-drawn diagrams, scene and evidence inventories, and advanced methods including forensic mapping and drone technology
  • Work through typical crime scenes utilizing specialized processing techniques such as fingerprint analysis, footwear and tire mark impressions, tool mark analysis, trace evidence recovery, bloodstain documentation, and firearms evidence handling
  • Connect with available support resources and partner agencies that can enhance investigative efforts
  • Produce thorough, precise, and complete reports that effectively communicate crime scene findings, evidence recovery procedures, and investigative steps to prosecutors

Equipment Requirements: All participants must bring an evidence kit to fully engage with the training. Those not purchasing Dirigo Safety's evidence kit must obtain the specified equipment independently, including a rolling cart, ultraviolet light, print cards, brushes, powders, casting materials, photo scales, and other specialized processing supplies.
