Trauma Informed Policing

The Connecticut Police Officer Standards and Training Council's Field Services Training Division offers a two-day training program titled Trauma Informed Policing, led by Dr. Lorenzo Boyd, PhD, and instructors from Renz Consulting. The course runs on Monday, October 26, 2026, from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM, and continues on Tuesday, October 27, 2026, from 8:00 AM to 12:00 PM. The training takes place at the New London Police Department, located at 5 Governor Winthrop Boulevard, New London, CT 06320.

This program explores the trauma-informed approach to policing, equipping officers with the knowledge to identify and respond appropriately when encountering trauma in their interactions with community members. The trauma-informed policing model works to minimize harm and prevent re-traumatization of individuals with trauma histories, strengthen relationships between police and communities, diminish race-based community trauma, support officer mental health and resilience, and enhance overall public safety outcomes.

The curriculum covers a comprehensive range of topics including the definition and nature of trauma, how trauma manifests in behavioral and psychological responses with potential lasting consequences, trauma-informed approaches at both the individual officer level and across departmental systems such as policies and procedures, the psychological toll of trauma on law enforcement personnel, trauma experienced within communities and through vicarious exposure, various manifestations of trauma responses, how trauma influences citizens' encounters with law enforcement, cultural contexts and narratives surrounding trauma, and practical strategies to support officer wellness.

Participation is limited to twenty-five attendees. Registration through the Acadis portal is required by the close of business on Monday, October 5, 2026. There is no tuition cost for this training. Participants may purchase lunch at nearby dining establishments. The standard uniform dress code for POST in-service training, as outlined in General Notice 23-02, will apply. Training supervisors are asked to ensure that all assigned personnel are informed of and adhere to the dress code requirements.

Upon successful completion of the course, participants will earn Review Training Credit.
