Course Overview

This course equips first-line supervisors with the knowledge and practical skills needed to effectively investigate employee misconduct and performance issues. Participants will learn how to properly counsel employees, navigate Weingarten Rights, and develop progressive discipline strategies while creating documentation that withstands legal scrutiny.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

POST requires first line supervisors to conduct minor investigations into employee misconduct and deficient performance. From processing the complaint to investigating the issues, a supervisor must be prepared to deal with performance and discipline issues as they arise in the workplace. Counseling employees on both performance and disciplinary matters requires knowledge and skills that are not discussed in most law enforcement trainings. Weingarten Rights will be fully discussed and explored and participants will participate and train in realistic scenarios develop to enhance their skills and knowledge in these areas.

Developing techniques to issue written warnings and written directives that document progressive discipline will be fully discussed and reviewed. Issuing written directives that will withstand scrutiny and challenges will be reviewed. Enforcing Rules, Regulations and Written Directive will also be reviewed and discussed.

How to hold a disciplinary conference, what to do during a crucial confrontation, what and how to document the facts after a disciplinary conference, what steps are necessary, what rights do union employees have, what rights does management have, starting the paper trail, what is corrective action, what is progressive discipline, how to change deficient behavior and performance and what to do if it doesn't change. Documentation, starting a paper trail, implementing discipline, dealing with 150E issues, performance improvement plans and design.
