This three-day course addresses the growing reality that police use-of-force encounters increasingly occur on the ground, due in part to widespread public training in mixed martial arts and grappling techniques. Officers will develop competency in three critical areas: preventing encounters from moving to the ground when feasible, surviving and responding effectively if forced into a ground-fighting scenario, and safely controlling subjects while on the ground. The training employs a systematic, concept-based approach to teach officers about various ground positions and how to position themselves to maintain safety and protect their duty-belt equipment. Instruction follows a crawl-walk-run progression methodology.
Lunch is available for purchase at nearby restaurants. The standard uniform dress code for POST in-service training does not apply to this class; participants should dress appropriately as directed by their training supervisors.
