Trauma Informed Policing

The Police Officer Standards and Training Council's Field Services Training Division offers a course on trauma-informed policing approaches. This one-day program runs on Wednesday, October 7, 2026, from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM at the Connecticut Police Academy located at 285 Preston Avenue, Meriden, Connecticut 06450.

Instruction is provided by Deputy Chief (Ret.) James Harris and the staff of J. Harris Academy of Police Training. Enrollment is limited to 30 attendees. Registration must be completed through the Acadis portal no later than the close of business on Wednesday, September 16, 2026.

The course explores the trauma-informed approach to policing by examining what trauma is and how it manifests. Participants will learn about the effects of trauma on both first responders and the public they serve, methods for trauma intervention, the underlying principles of trauma-informed practice, conducting trauma-informed interviews, and approaches to special circumstances while staying current with best practices.

This course carries no tuition fee. Lunch may be obtained at nearby restaurants. The uniform dress code specified in POST In-Service Training General Notice 23-02 applies to all attendees. For questions or additional information, contact the Field Services Training Division at 203-427-2625.
