This one-day seminar examines the legal landscape and practical considerations affecting supervisory responsibilities in modern law enforcement. Participants will explore civil and criminal liability exposure for both individual supervisors and municipal agencies, with emphasis on constitutional policing practices and public accountability.
The course integrates legal analysis with real-world case studies to help command-level and first-line supervisors understand their obligations regarding personnel accountability, internal oversight mechanisms, and citizen complaint processes. Instruction covers federal statutory frameworks governing law enforcement conduct and liability, recent consent decree requirements, landmark case law principles establishing agency responsibility, and alignment of departmental practices with nationally recognized standards.
