Crimes Against Children

This intensive 24-hour course equips law enforcement professionals with specialized knowledge and practical skills for investigating crimes against children. Participants will explore the complete investigative process—from the initial report through courtroom proceedings—with particular emphasis on proven methodologies tailored to these sensitive cases.

The curriculum covers behavioral analysis of seven distinct categories of child molesters, including their patterns and characteristics as defined by the DSM-5. Attendees will develop proficiency in interviewing offenders and conducting forensic interviews with child victims and witnesses. The course utilizes real case studies to illustrate different evidence classifications and their applications in investigations.

Participants will learn how to prepare comprehensive search and seizure warrants for preferential child molesters, including proper procedures for seizing child pornography, child erotica, DNA evidence, and computer-related materials. The course also addresses emerging investigative strategies and the critical importance of rapid response in child abduction cases, including the development and deployment of Child Abduction Response Teams (CART) composed of multidisciplinary and multijurisdictional experts to enhance recovery outcomes.

Intended Audience

This course is designed for patrol officers, detectives (both newly assigned and experienced), investigations supervisors, crime scene technicians, military investigative personnel, non-sworn personnel involved in investigations, and prosecutor's office staff who handle crimes against children. The class is restricted to active sworn and non-sworn law enforcement, investigators, and prosecuting attorneys employed by governmental agencies.

Prerequisites

While not mandatory, it is recommended that participants have completed a basic investigations course or possess knowledge of proven investigative techniques applicable to crimes against children cases.
