Traffic Crash Investigation by IPTM
Traffic Crash Reconstruction
This course represents the third and final offering in IPTM's comprehensive three-course series on traffic crash investigation. Building directly on the foundation established in the Advanced Traffic Crash Investigation course, this program deepens your expertise in vehicle dynamics and collision analysis through rigorous mathematical and scientific study.
Course Overview
Participants engage in an in-depth exploration of time and distance calculations, two-dimensional momentum analysis, and impact speed determination using momentum-based equations. The curriculum emphasizes both theoretical understanding and practical application, with extensive project work designed to provide hands-on experience in crash reconstruction methodologies.
Topics Covered
- Derivation and origin of commonly used speed calculation formulas
- Vehicle speed determination at impact using conservation of linear momentum
- Collision behavior analysis through Newton's three laws of motion
- Commercial vehicle and motorcycle dynamics in collision scenarios
- Determination of vehicle direction of travel, initial contact points, and roadway positioning
Learning Activities
The course incorporates extensive project work requiring each student to diagram and analyze multiple crash scenarios and complete vector sum analysis for each. This hands-on approach ensures participants gain practical experience applying the technical concepts covered throughout the program.
Intended Audience
This training is appropriate for law enforcement and private traffic crash investigators, claims adjusters, engineers, attorneys, safety officers, military investigative personnel, animators, and graphic designers.
Course Duration
80 hours total instruction time
Prerequisites
Due to the highly technical nature of this material, successful completion of IPTM's Advanced Traffic Crash Investigation course or equivalent is mandatory. Students without a strong background in mathematics and physics are strongly encouraged to complete IPTM's 16-hour Re-Introduction to Math and Physics (Online) course beforehand.
Required Materials
- Scientific calculator
- Compass
Recommended Materials
- Three-ring binder (1 1/2 inch)
Course Fee
$1,195.00
Schedule Information
Classes meet from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM daily. Multiple session dates and locations are available throughout 2026 and 2027 at various venues across the country.
Important Notes
Florida law enforcement officers should be aware that this course does not qualify for Salary Incentive Credit for the FDLE course "Traffic Accident Reconstruction." ACTAR-accredited individuals may retake this course for continuing education units only once every five years following their initial five-year accreditation period. This course is not eligible for certificate discounts.
