Course Overview

This intensive training equips law enforcement officers with advanced knowledge of smuggling techniques and contraband concealment strategies. Participants will examine sophisticated methods used by drug traffickers and smugglers to hide narcotics, weapons, and currency within land vehicles. The instruction covers current trafficking patterns, the impact of organized criminal enterprises, and practical interdiction tactics grounded in legal and ethical frameworks.

Course Objectives

Upon completion, students will be able to:

  • Analyze current contraband smuggling patterns and evolving trafficking trends
  • Understand the organizational structure and influence of major criminal organizations
  • Differentiate between lawful traffic stops and various law enforcement encounter types, including consensual interactions
  • Execute safe and effective traffic stops that transition into criminal interdiction arrests
  • Conduct appropriate conversational questioning and concealed interviews during encounters
  • Request consent in compliance with legal standards
  • Apply proper K-9 deployment protocols and relevant case law
  • Execute thorough and lawful vehicle searches
  • Identify indicators suggesting criminal activity
  • Apply search and seizure laws, including doctrines of search incident to arrest, probable cause, and consent-based searches
  • Determine appropriate timing for escalating search procedures
  • Locate contraband concealed in highly sophisticated compartments
  • Properly handle and document cellular phones and evidentiary materials
  • Respond appropriately upon discovering criminal activity or contraband
  • Safely handle and identify emerging and controlled substances including Fentanyl, Tranq, 2CI, 2CE, GHB, Khat, PCP, Flakka, Molly, and liquid methamphetamine
  • Apply asset forfeiture procedures for currency seizures
  • Enhance officer safety awareness
  • Conduct all interdiction activities legally, ethically, and professionally
