ABOUT OUR DEPARTMENT

The Yarmouth Police Department proudly employs a dedicated group of professional men and women who work daily in a concerted effort to deliver the best possible policing services to our:

  •     Residents
  •     Business community
  •     Visitors

Our Department motto is quite clear: “Excellence in Policing”. This motto, along with our mission statement, clearly articulates our desire to do the best job possible while working with our community.

Throughout our workday we rely on our volunteers, our citizen academy graduates, and our residents to partner with us to enhance the quality of life within and around the community.

OUR DIVISIONS

Patrol Division:

The Patrol Division is responsible for the uniformed patrol functions of the department including 24-hour response to the initial investigation of crimes and incidents, traffic enforcement and control, accident investigation, community policing programs, specialized operations such as SWAT and K-9, and coordination for special events. The Yarmouth Police Department employs approximately 61 sworn police officers and supervisors and 13 civilian personnel.

DETECTIVES DIVISION:

The Detective Division investigates reported felony and serious misdemeanor offenses (excluding narcotic and vice related crimes) occurring within the jurisdiction of the Town of Yarmouth. It is the responsibility of the division to identify, arrest, and present offenders to the judicial system. This is accomplished through cooperative efforts and partnerships with officers and investigators from other divisions, personnel from other city departments, other local, state and federal agencies, and the citizens of Yarmouth.

K-9 DIVISION

The Yarmouth Police Canine Unit was the first established canine unit on Cape Cod and originally deployed three canine teams.  Yarmouth canine teams attended a sixteen week canine academy and are certified to assist patrol in various aspects of police work.  The most common functions of the Canine Unit are:

  •     Tracking of criminals who have fled the scene of a crime
  •     Tracking lost, missing and endangered citizens
  •     Area Searches
  •     Building Searches
  •     Evidence Searches
  •     Criminal apprehension
  •     Crowd Control

MENTAL HEALTH OUTREACH

The Yarmouth Police Department formed a Mental Health Outreach Team in 2015. The MHOT is currently comprised of officers that have received advanced training in crisis intervention (CIT) and two behavioral health clinicians. Funding for the MHOT is supported by a Department of Mental Health Jail Diversion Grant. The MHOT operates by pairing a clinician and an officer to co-respond to mental health crisis and provide follow-up services to those living with mental illness in our community.

BIKE PATROL

The Yarmouth Police Department began a uniformed Bicycle Patrol Unit in the summer of 1995. The goal of the program was to localize police coverage and bring the department closer in touch with the community. The unit started out with six bicycle officers and four bicycles. Since then it has grown to a total of twenty-one officers and twelve bicycles.

The purpose of the bike patrol is to increase patrol coverage in areas where traditional vehicles cannot access. Bike officers on their mount easily maneuver parks, alleys, and shopping districts.
