Woodbridge Police Department

Our Community
Nestled in the scenic hills of New Haven County, Woodbridge is a quiet, vibrant town with a deep sense of community and a proud historical legacy. Incorporated in 1784 and named after Rev. Benjamin Woodbridge—the first graduate of Harvard College—our town has grown from colonial farmland into one of Connecticut’s most desirable residential communities.
Woodbridge is known for its natural beauty, top-rated schools, and safe neighborhoods. With miles of open space, wooded trails, and portions of the West Rock Ridge State Park within its borders, the town is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts and families alike. Residents enjoy access to a variety of community amenities, while still being only minutes from the cultural and educational opportunities of New Haven.
In addition to its peaceful character, Woodbridge played a surprising role in America’s early industrial development. In the 1830s, local resident Thomas Sanford began producing some of the first friction matches in his Woodbridge kitchen. This humble operation laid the groundwork for what would eventually become part of the Diamond Match Company. It remains one of the most notable industries to have originated in the town and reflects Woodbridge’s long-standing spirit of innovation and community enterprise.
