About Our Department

The UConn Police Department is a fully functional police agency with the same statutory authority as a municipal police department in the State of Connecticut. The Department is responsible for, and its primary mission is, the protection of lives and property at the University of Connecticut and all adjacent areas within the jurisdiction of the UConn Police Department. This includes the main campus in Storrs and the regional campuses located statewide.

The UConn Police Department currently has a force of 80 authorized sworn Police Officers of all ranks. Fifty-five of those Officers are assigned to the main campus in Storrs with the remainder assigned to the regional campuses throughout the state.  Officers of the UConn Police Department are also appointed special constables within the Town of Mansfield.

The majority of UConn Police Officers are assigned to the Patrol Division, which can include special assignments such as K9 handler, Motorcycle Officer, SWAT, and Mountain Bike/ ATV Patrol.  In addition to promotional opportunities, Officers can be assigned to the Detective Division, Training Division, Professional Standards, and Community Policing.

As Connecticut’s flagship university, the University of Connecticut is home to numerous sporting events and special events.  UConn Police Officers work many dynamic assignments at Rentschler Field in East Hartford, Gampel Pavilion in Storrs, as well as a number of venues that host NCAA competitions and other entertainment events.  UConn Police are at the forefront of safety and security of large scale events.

To accomplish the goals of the department requires the skills and talents of the professional men and women who work for the UConn Police Department and who serve the university community seven days a week, twenty four hours a day.

The UConn Police Department is an internationally accredited law enforcement agency.
