ACCREDITATION

• On July 13, 2011, the Pocono Mountain Regional Police Department became an Accredited Pennsylvania Law Enforcement Agency. At the 2011 Annual Pennsylvania Chiefs of Police Conference, the Pennsylvania Law Enforcement Accreditation Commission (PLEAC) unanimously approved the Pocono Mountain Regional Police Department for Accredited Status. PMRPD became the 68th department in the state and first in Monroe County to meet this professional standard as established by PLEAC. Only approximately 6% of the 1,200 law enforcement agencies have earned this status in Pennsylvania.  Since 2011, the PMRPD has undergone 4 additional Accreditation Assessments. These re-assessments occurred in 2014, 2017, 2020, and 2023.

•To reach the level of accreditation, a department must establish policies that cover approximately 146 standards of best policing practices. During the assessments, three independent assessors from the Pennsylvania Chiefs of Police Association conducted an extensive review and evaluation of PMRPD's policies and procedures. They also monitor proof of compliance in each of the standards. The assessors prepare a report which is reviewed by the entirety of the Pennsylvania Law Enforcement Accreditation Commission upon which a vote is taken to grant Accredited status.

HISTORY

•The Pocono Mountain Regional Police Department became its own entity in 1994 with the converging of the Mount Pocono Borough and Tobyhanna Township Police Departments. Tunkhannock Township joined in 1995, Coolbaugh Township joined in 1997, and Barrett Township Completed the Department in 2015. The regionalization of the five departments gave the communities the opportunity to utilize manpower to the greatest potential while maximizing police coverage.

•The force began with 15 officers. Now, in 2024, 30-years later, it employs 46 officers within specialized divisions. These divisions include Detective, Patrol, Narcotics, K-9, School Resource Officer, Mountain Bike Patrol, Motorcycle Unit, Honor Guard, Accident Reconstruction, and SWAT Team. The department covers an area of approximately 238 square miles.

•The Pocono Mountain Regional Police Department focuses on a proactive, community-based enforcement strategy. The department is always searching for additional technology, current patrol and enforcement strategies, and ways for the citizens to become more active in problem solving with our community issues.
