Passaic County Police Academy
Alternate Route Candidate Entrance Exam
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Must be a citizen of the United States.
Must be between 18 and 35 years of age.
Must possess a valid New Jersey driver’s license.
As a prerequisite for police academy attendance, appointees will be required to successfully pass a thorough medical and psychiatric examination. Any psychological, medical, or physical condition or defect that would:
Prevent the efficient performance of the duties of a law enforcement officer,
Cause the recruit to be a hazard to themselves or others, or
Be aggravated by the performance of those duties,
will be cause for rejection.
Ability to follow rules and procedures.
Ability to read with reasonable speed and comprehension in order to absorb written information.
Must possess sixty (60) college credits or two (2) years of active military service.
PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
Acceptance into this program is highly competitive. Candidates who are selected will be enrolled directly into the regular 26-week Basic Course for Police Officers. All application costs, admission expenses, tuition, and other associated fees are the responsibility of the alternate route candidate.
TESTING REQUIREMENTS
Applicants will be ranked and offered enrollment in the Basic Course for Police Officers based on a combination of:
Written examination scores
Physical fitness test scores
Interview rankings (mock hiring panels)
HIRING PROCESS
A written examination will be conducted by the New Jersey State Association of Chiefs of Police on:
Tuesday, February 3, 2026, at 6:00 PM

You MUST be registered through PoliceApp to take the examination. No individual will be admitted into the exam location unless they are properly registered through PoliceApp.
Candidates who successfully pass the written examination will advance to the physical fitness assessment. Candidates who pass both phases will then be interviewed by law enforcement panels coordinated by the Passaic County Police Chiefs Association.
A cumulative ranking will be calculated, and an eligibility list will be established. Candidates will remain on the eligibility list until it is exhausted or for two (2) years, whichever occurs first.
Prior to entering a police class, candidates will be required to successfully complete:
A background investigation
Drug testing
All applicable New Jersey Police Training Commission (PTC) standards while enrolled
