The following is an EXTERNAL announcement for the position of Fire Lieutenant in the Emergency Services Division.
POSITION TITLE: Fire Lieutenant (Emergency Services Division)
ANNOUNCEMENT TYPE: External Agency
- SALARY RANGE:
- FR Lieutenant/EMT $ 50,000.00 - $ 62,169.00 Annually
- FR Lieutenant/Medic $ 59,000.00 - $ 66,108.00 Annually
CLOSING DATE: December 28, 2020, at 5 pm (CST).
GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
The position's purpose is to provide supervisory work directing a fire station's activities within Walton County Fire Rescue. Work is performed under the supervision of a Battalion Chief or District Chief.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Applicants must have a minimum of two (2) years of continuous full-time career service with a fire or ems agency to the promotion date. Any applicants with a break in full-time service will not be allowed to test in the promotional process.
- Must not be in probationary status at the time of application.
- Must possess the following certifications before applying for the rank of Lieutenant:
- EMT or Paramedic
- Firefighter 2 compliance
- Must possess the following State of Florida certifications before completion of Lieutenant probationary status of 1 year:
- Fire Officer 1
- Pump Operator
- Must know the necessary procedures and principles of general office duties.
- Must have a working knowledge of all rules, regulations, and information necessary for successful job performance.
- Must have the ability to exercise sound judgment and prepare clear and concise reports.
- Must meet performance standards in the last two years of evaluations.
* Preference may be given to applicants who possess all required certifications at the time of application.
* A member meeting the qualifications above may participate in the selection process but shall not be appointed to a vacant position within one year of the discipline receipt.
EXAMPLES OF RESPONSIBILITIES:
Assists the Battalion Chief/District Chief in his/her duties and may perform in a District Chief's capacity in their absence.
- Coordinate and manage the response to emergency incidents in an assigned district.
- Coordinate and manage the day-to-day operation of the assigned station for the assigned shift.
- Coordinate with the Fire Rescue Training Division to ensure scheduling of daily training and other training activities.
- Will review reports for completeness and quality assurance.
- Keep records and evaluate the performance of subordinates.
- Schedule and coordinate activities and prepares reports as required to support the personnel and activities of the area to which the position is assigned.
- May participate in the hire, transfer, suspension, promotion, discipline, and assignment of personnel.
- Will prepare performance evaluations on subordinates.
- Will complete special projects as assigned.
- Assists in developing department goals and objectives; Assists in developing policies, procedures, and priorities to meet established goals; Assists in developing, implementing, and maintaining strategic, fiscal, and capital improvement plans for the areas of responsibility.
- Continually evaluates programs, policies, and goals.
- Provide firefighting and medical training. Ensure that personnel receives proper training to perform duties successfully.
- Performs related work as required.
SELECTION PROCESS:

Your resume will be reviewed by HR staff to ensure that you possess the minimum qualifications for this position. Those applicants who meet the minimum qualifications will be required to pass a written examination, an Incident Command simulation practical exam with an in-basket exercise, and a peer review interview panel.
RETENTION:
The Newly promoted Lieutenant will be placed on a one (1) year probationary status and must fulfill specific requirements to complete the probation period successfully. In addition to completing the probation status, there will be specific requirements the Lieutenant must complete within the 2nd year of being promoted to retain the rank of Lieutenant.
- Must complete ICS-300 within one (1) year of probation date
- Must receive satisfactory performance evaluation from the Lieutenants assigned District Chiefs at the end of the probationary period
- Must obtain State of Florida Fire Instructor 1 certification within two (2) years of promotion date
- Must successfully attend and complete an approved Leadership Class within two (2) years of promotion date
*Note: Failure to successfully fulfill these requirements will result in the demotion of the Lieutenant.
