Full-Time Police Officer

The Cedar Grove Police Department is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Full-Time Police Officer.

The Township’s officers dedicate themselves to protecting the lives, property, and rights of people; maintaining order; and impartially enforcing the law while working in tandem with the community.  As such, we are looking for hard-working, dedicated, and energetic individuals to join our police department.  

A law enforcement career is one that is dynamic, unpredictable, and simultaneously full of challenges and rewards that ultimately allow an individual to make a positive impact on the community they are sworn to protect and serve.  A police officer’s most fundamental duty is to protect the Constitutionally protected rights of those they encounter, all while working toward preserving life, safeguarding property, ensuring the innocent are protected against deception, the weak are safeguarded against oppression, and maintaining the rule of law.

Job Responsibilities:

The job responsibilities for the position include, but are not limited to the following:

Exercise authority consistent with obligations imposed by the oath of office.

Abide by all rules, regulations, ordinances, laws, and department policies, procedures, and directives governing police officers.

Be accountable and responsible to their supervisor for obeying all lawful orders.

Coordinate their efforts with other employees of the department to collaboratively achieve department objectives.

Conduct themselves in accordance with the highest ethical standards both on and off duty.

Perform their duties courteously, promptly, faithfully and diligently.

Operate with keen attention to detail that places the interests of the Department and Township above their own.

Take appropriate action to protect life and property, preserve peace, maintain a visible presence to deter crime, detect and arrest violators of the law, enforce all federal, state, and local laws and ordinances coming within department jurisdiction, safeguard the rights of individuals as provided by the United States Constitution and Constitution of the State of New Jersey, safely and expeditiously regulate traffic, aid citizens in matters within police jurisdiction and all other duties assigned.

Fulfill all lawful tasks, orders, and functions as directed by a supervisor, that may, from time to time, be required given the ever-changing nature of the profession that, in no way, can be confined to the job description provided herein.

Required Qualifications:

Must be between the ages of 21 and 35 years of age.

Must be a resident of New Jersey and a citizen of the United States.

Must possess a formal education or training as evidenced by a high school diploma or an equivalency certificate.

Must possess a minimum of sixty (60) college credits or thirty (30) college credits from an accredited college or university recognized by the New Jersey Department of Education and have prior military experience or law enforcement experience.

Ability to perform all the tasks and duties of a police officer.

Possess a valid New Jersey driver’s license.

No indictable criminal history conviction and of good moral character.

Hiring Process:

The department will accept resumes and cover letters from potential candidates.

Selected candidates will be interviewed by the Township Manager and Chief of Police.

Candidates selected to continue in the process will be asked to submit an application.

Complete and pass a thorough background investigation.

Complete and pass a psychological and medical examination to include a drug screening.

Salary and Benefits:

$49,513 to $64,349. NJSHBP, Dental, PTO including vacation, sick, compensatory time, holiday pay, longevity, and others as may be conferred through the West Essex PBA Local 81 Contract and/or Employment with the Township of Cedar Grove.
