NJ PTC Certified/Licensed Police Officer or Non-Certified who will attend NJ Police Academy

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Must be a citizen of the United States and reside in New Jersey.
  • Must be at least 21 years of age at the time of appointment and less than 35 years of age.
  • Must possess a valid New Jersey driver's license.
  • Must have a High School Diploma or equivalent (GED).
  • Must be of sound moral character verified by a background investigation. 
  • Must be able to read, write, and speak the English language intelligently. 
  • Must be in good physical condition.
  • Must not have been convicted of any crime, disorderly person's offense, or felony offense in any other jurisdiction that involved moral turpitude.
  • Shall NOT be a member of any group that advocates for the overthrow of the government or discrimination or violence against any protected class of people. 
  • Must possess a certification for Basic Course for Police Officers from a New Jersey Police Academy or currently attending a police academy in New Jersey (alternate route) or possess a SLEO II certification that is waiver eligible.
  • Must be able to attend a New Jersey Police Academy and satisfy all of the requirements therein to graduate with a Basic Police Officer certification.
  • NJ PTC Physical Fitness Assessment - SLEO II Waivers

Effective 9/30/2023, Special Law Enforcement Officer II academy night classes and abbreviated classes are not waiver eligible. Co-mingled SLEO II courses with BCPO recruits are eligible for the waiver process.

***A SLEO II waiver applicant, if selected, may be required to pass the NJ PTC Physical Fitness Assessment in order to be accepted into a police academy waiver class. The ability to pass the physical fitness assessment will be a condition of employment for a SLEO II waiver. The selected waiver applicant may be required to perform the physical fitness assessment before being sent to a NJ Police Academy for the Physical Fitness Assessment. The minimum passing test requirements include the following: Vertical Jump - Minimum of 15"; 1 Minute Sit-up - minimum of 28 repetitions; 1 Minute Push-Up - Minimum 24 Repetitions; 300 Meter Run - 70.1 Seconds or Less; and 1.5 Mile Run - 15:55 Minutes or Less.

BENEFITS

  • Starting salary is $47,000 in the police academy and $58,000 for those possessing full certification or waiver-eligible certification. 
  • May offer lateral pay incentives based on the number of years of service and experience.
  • Salary guide with a top step at $126,000.00.   Based on the current contract / expires 12/31/2025
  • Extra Duty Jobs - $85 an hour, $105, after 8 hours, and for emergency road work.
