The Byram Township Police Department is currently accepting applications for the position of Entry-Level Police Officer.

No prior law enforcement experience or certification is required. Byram Township is a New Jersey Civil Service Commission jurisdiction;however, per NJSA 11A:4-1.3, we are authorized to hire non-PTC-certified candidates directly. If you are currently attending a police academy as an Alternate Route candidate, and have not yet been hired by another jurisdiction, you are eligible to apply and should include you anticipated academy graduation date on your resume. If you are PTC-certified and have already been hired by another agency, we are unable to accept your application at this time.

Byram Township Police Department has 14 sworn officers, we patrol approximately 22 square miles and have a population of approximately 8,300. The Township is located in Sussex County, and has numerous lakes, hiking trails and historical attractions, such as Waterloo Village. The Township is bisected by U.S. Route 206 and is located at Exit 25 on I-80. Byram Township borders Morris and Warren Counties as well as 8 other municipalities.

Minimum Requirements

  • Must be a citizen of the United States and a New Jersey resident.
  • Must be between 18 and 34 years of age at the time of appointment.
  • Must posses a valid New Jersey driver’s license.
  • Must have minimum of 60 college credits or two (2) years active military service in which the applicant has received an honorable discharge or a combination of the two. (Must provide DD 214 as proof of military service).
  • Must be of good moral character, with no indictable criminal convictions or crimes involving moral turpitude.
  • Is able to read, write, and speak the English language well and intelligently.
  • Must successfully pass a Physical Fitness Assessment (per PTC standards), a thorough background investigation, oral interviews, and a medical examination, which includes a psychological evaluation and drug screening. Candidate must successfully pass the police academy basic police class as per NJ Police Training Commission standards.

Testing Requirements

Physical Fitness Test – The physical fitness test will be held at Lenape Valley Regional High School – 28 Stanhope Road, Stanhope, NJ 07874. The tentative date for the test is Sunday, September 7, 2025. The time is to be determined. Applicants will be notified of the date and time of the test. Minimum standards for the following exercises must be met to continue on in the hiring process. Candidates are encouraged to give maximum effort regarding repetitions and achieved times for each exercise category during the

Physical fitness test:

  • Vertical Jump: 12.5 inches
  • 1-Minute Sit-Up: 22 repetitions
  • 300-Meter Run: 84 seconds or less
  • 1-Minute Push-Up: 19 repetitions
  • 1.5 Mile Run: 19:00 minutes or less

Hiring Process:
