The Millville Police Department is organized into three divisions. Approximately 100 police officers and civilian employees make up the Uniform Patrol, Investigations, and Services Divisions. Each division is led by a Division Commander with the rank of Lieutenant.

The Uniform Patrol Division is the largest division and is comprised of uniformed police officers in marked police vehicles and civilian Police Dispatchers to provide police response to calls for service 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to the approximate 28,000 residents, visitors, and businesses that comprise the City of Millville.

The Investigations Division is comprised of a Criminal Investigations Bureau staffed by Detectives and a Sergeant who investigate more serious and violent crimes, and a Proactive Investigations Team that focuses on investigations involving gangs, drugs, and guns.

The Services Division encompasses a myriad of police services, duties, and administrative responsibilities including grant writing, policy research and review, fleet management, uniform and equipment management, purchasing, State Attorney General and County Prosecutor required reports, UCR (NIBRS) reporting, and all the services and duties provided by:

Evidence & Property Unit
Training Unit
Administrative Unit- The Administrative Unit consists of a Sergeant, Special Officers, and civilian employees that are responsible for Traffic Safety, Event Planning and Management, Firearms Permits, Records, Megan’s Law, Information Technology, and Animal Control.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Age: 18-35 years of age (unless you have military service)
  • Citizenship: Must be a U.S. citizen.
  • Residency: May be required to be a New Jersey resident.
  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Driving: Valid New Jersey driver's license.
  • Background: Pass a background check, including criminal history and driving record.

Job Description/General Duties:

Police officers have a wide range of duties focused on maintaining public safety and enforcing the law. These include patrolling, responding to calls, investigating crimes, making arrests, and enforcing traffic laws. They also play a crucial role in community engagement and providing assistance to the public. All other duties that may be assigned.

Testing Requirements:

  • Physical Qualification Test (PQT):
    This test battery includes timed events like a 300 meter run, push-ups, sit-ups, and a 1.5-mile run.
  • Background Investigation:
    A thorough background check is conducted to verify an applicant's character and suitability for the position.
  • Psychological Evaluation:
    This evaluates an applicant's mental and emotional suitability for law enforcement.
  • Medical Examination:
    A comprehensive medical exam is required to ensure the applicant's physical health and ability to perform the job.
  • Drug Screening:
    Applicants must pass a drug test, as outlined in the Attorney General's Law Enforcement Drug Testing Policy.
  • Oral Interview:
    An interview with a panel or hiring authority may also be required.

Hiring Process:

1. Application and Screening:

  • Application Submission:
    Candidates submit an online application, often through a specific agency's website, detailing personal information, education, work history, and other relevant details.
  • Online Candidate Screening:
    This may involve a Personal History Statement and an Authorization for Release form, used for background checks.

2. Assessments and Testing:

  • Physical Fitness/Agility Test: Evaluates physical capabilities required for police work.

3. Background and Psychological/Medical Evaluations:

  • Background Investigation: A comprehensive check of criminal history, employment records, academic records, and personal references.
  • Psychological Evaluation: Assesses mental stability and suitability for the demanding nature of police work.
  • Medical Examination: Ensures physical fitness and ability to perform the job.

4. Interviews:

  • Oral Interviews: Conducted by a panel to assess communication skills, judgment, and suitability for the role.
  • Behavioral-Based Interviews: May be conducted by commanders or senior officers.

5. Final Stages:

  • Conditional Offer of Employment: Made to candidates who successfully pass all previous stages.
  • Police Academy Training: Candidates undergo intensive training in law enforcement techniques, community policing, and physical fitness.
  • Probationary Period: Following academy training, a period of on-the-job supervision and evaluation follows before full-fledged officer status is granted.

Millville residents have hiring priority based on address at the time of the closing date of the New Jersey Civil Service Commission Law Enforcement Entry Exam. After Millville residents have been exhausted from the Civil Service Certification List, Cumberland County residents are provided with preference. After the County list is exhausted, applications are open to all State residents. The Millville Police Department will not appoint any applicant to the title of police officer who is disqualified as a result of a pre-employment background investigation.
