Population of 4,100 with an area of approximately 13 square miles. We are about 20 minutes from the beaches of Rye and Hampton and approximately 10 minutes from downtown Portsmouth. On average our annual call volume is approximately 13,500 to include arrests, motor vehicle stops, citations, accidents, alarms, welfare checks and other call types. When fully staffed we have 9 full time sworn officers as well as Willow, Our therapy dog.

We are a small tight knit department whose beliefs are based on our commitment to service and community, We are a smaller New England town with access to several large shopping plazas and the outlets in Kittery, Maine. We are moments away from major thorough fares allowing for quick trips to the Ocean, Mountains or nearby cities like Boston, MA or Portland, Maine.

Minimum Requirements:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • 3 years full time employment post high school
  • Valid NH driver's license or ability to obtain same as required by NH Motor Vehicle Law.
  • Certification by New Hampshire Police Standards and Training Council as a full-time Police Officer or the ability to obtain certification within a reasonable period of time;OR any equivalent combination of education, experience, or service in the Armed Forces which demonstrates possession of the required knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the duties of the position set forth by the Police Chief and Department Policy.

Testing Requirements:

Any written tests shall require a minimum passing score of 70%. The Physical agility testing is a pass/fail standard, you MUST pass all events in order to move on to the next phase.  Some phases of the process can be waived for Certified candidates. 

Hiring Process:

The hiring process shall include:

  • Written test
  • Physical agility testing
  • Oral boards
  • Background investigation
  • Drug screening
  • Doctor physical examination
  • Psychological testing
