UNC Department of Public Safety serves a main campus of over 729 acres as well as properties located throughout Carrboro, Chapel Hill and Orange County. UNC is an open campus which means we have a lot of visitors on campus for anything from attending a special event to just walking around and looking at the grounds. The Department of Public Safety consist of 53 sworn officers, 15 reserve officers, non-sworn security staff that are full and part time as well as telecommunications who work in our 911 dispatch center. We are a nationally accredited agency. Continuous training is provided to every officer in addition to state mandated yearly training. The Department has the most updated equipment. The University offers free tuition for up to three classes per year. These are only a couple of the benefits you would receive as an Officer at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

We are responsible for many facets of protecting life and property, 365 days a year, 24 hours a day. Our greatest goal is to provide customer-focused and problem solving services in partnership with the diverse community in which we serve. We strive to achieve this goal through community oriented policing which includes programming, preventing crime and the continuous building of relationships with the community on and off campus. All sworn officers must meet the requirements set forth by the North Carolina Criminal Justice and Training and Standards Commission. The Department of Public Safety enforces federal, state and local laws as well as University policies on all properties which we have jurisdictional authority.
