The testing process consists of a physical fitness test at the NHPSTC entry level physical fitness standards.  All applicants will be subject to a full background investigation including polygraph, medical and drug testing, and psychological exams.  Applications must be made through

Thornton Police Officers perform a variety of assignments including but not limited to, traffic enforcement, accident investigations, criminal investigations and arrests, yearly detail options, and a variety of community policing efforts.


Salary is $26.02 (non-certified) to $34.98 per hour depending on qualifications and experience. Non-certified officers receive an additional 2 step salary increase ($27.34) after successful completion of the academy and field training program.


Officers enjoy a relaxed but professional uniform standard which allows well-groomed facial hair, visible tattoos, and exterior vests.

Officers are also issued a cruiser (restrictions apply) and a patrol rifle. The police department also recently updated their pistol, Taser, and Body Camera programs.

Officers also receive a gym membership to a local gym that is open 24 hours.

Officers work a rotating 4 on 3 off schedule with rotating weekends off and the ability to swap shifts as needed.

The Town of Thornton offers a top-tier medical plan with 85% of the premium paid for by the town. Those who have insurance elsewhere are eligible to receive a yearly $5000.00 stipend.

The Town of Thornton also provides 12 paid holidays, personal days, 2 weeks of paid vacation after the 1st year of continuous employment (non-certified officers), and sick time.

Officers patrol an assigned area for the purpose of crime prevention and law enforcement.  Duties include but are not limited to:  Calls for Service; investigation of crimes; identification/apprehension of offenders; prevention of crime, community policing events and programs; motor vehicle enforcement.  Applicants must have the ability to exercise good common sense; discretion; be able to analyze situations quickly and objectively; make decisions under pressure; and perform ALL the essential job functions of a police officer.

College education or military experience desirable

NH Certified Police Officer preferred

Part 1 – Medical Requirement

New Hampshire State Law (RSA 188-F:27 III-d – III-j) requires that all police, state corrections, and probation-parole officers hired after January 1, 2001, as a condition of continued certification and employment, must furnish Police Standards and Training Council every 3 years with a certificate from a licensed physician, physician’s assistant, or registered nurse practitioner who has conducted a medical examination of the officer according to protocols adopted by the Council certifying that in the opinion of the examiner, the officer is physically capable of participating in the Council’s physical fitness test.

Part 11 – Physical Agility Requirement

As of January 1, 2001, and thereafter, NH State Law (RSA 188-F:27 III-d – III-j) requires that all police, state corrections, and probation-parole officer hired after that date, as a condition of continued certification and employment, every 3 years during their law enforcement careers must pass a physical performance test, administered by their department or by the Police Standards and Training Council, according to protocols adopted by the Council.  (The current protocols consist of a timed 1.5-mile run, push ups, and sit-ups; however, they are subject to change by the Council from time to time).


Candidates are required to pass a physical fitness test based on NH PSTC entry level standards.


Successful candidates must complete the physical fitness exam, oral board interview, Chief’s interview, background investigation including polygraph exam, psychological and medical exams.

Out of State certified applicants will need to complete the law package classes as determined by NH Police Standards and Training.
