SPD offers various career opportunities such as bicycle patrol, special response team, detective, canine unit and community policing. Shippensburg Police Department serves Shippensburg Borough in both Cumberland and Franklin County. Shippensburg is the oldest community of the Cumberland Valley, and the second oldest west of the Susquehanna River in Pennsylvania. The population of Shippensburg Borough is approximately 5,638 and significantly increases with visitors and students attending Shippensburg University. Shippensburg Borough is 2.038 square miles. 8,800 complaints handled annually.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Possession of a diploma from an accredited high school or a graduate equivalency diploma
  • Must be a United States citizen
  • Be physically or mentally fit to perform the full duties of a police officer
  • Prior to appointment possess a valid motor vehicle operator's license issued by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania
  • Must have reached their 20th birthday before the deadline for submitting completed applications

Job Description/General Duties:

A police officer monitors and maintains civil order, enforces ordinances and laws, and ensures the general safety of the public.

Testing Requirements:

  • Physical Fitness Test- The physical fitness test consists of sit-ups, a 300-meter run, push-ups, and a 1.5-mile run. Applicants must pass each event.
  • Written Examination- The written examination shall be graded on a one-hundred-point scale, and an applicant must score 70% or higher to continue the application process.
  • Oral Examination- The oral examination shall involve questioning the applicant on how he or she would handle situations relevant to police work.
