Job Description

General Duties and Responsibilities but not limited to: Motor vehicle work: traffic control, accident investigations, MV law enforcement, motorist assists. Fire, rescue and other police agency assists. Criminal law: investigation of suspicious persons and vehicles, buildings and businesses security checks, escorts, public relations (in nursing homes, senior housing,rela schools, etc.) and routine patrol. Miscellaneous: dog complaints, missing persons, lockouts, welfare checks, relaying paperwork to court. Write reports for all the above. Equipment used includes the police cruiser, portable and mobile radio systems, fire arms and small equipment such as alco-sensors, etc. A patrol officer often uses independent judgement is very often in contact with the public. The job can be very highly stressful.
 
The successful candidate will demonstrate both a willingness to serve a diverse community and an eagerness to join the ranks of this professional police agency.

The successful candidate will possess the following minimum requirements: be certified or certifiable as a police officer by the VT Criminal Justice Training Council (VCJTC) and must be able to perform all essential functions of the job. Preference will be given to those applicants who are currently certified through the VCJTC. However, those without certification are also encouraged to apply.

Job Requirements

A high School education is required for this job. The successful candidate must undergo a background check, a lie detector test, psychological testing, physical testing and graduate from the Vermont Police Academy or equivalent. A valid driver's license is required. Good physical condition is important.  Candidates must be a U.S. citizen, minimum age of 18 and be able to perform all the essential functions involved with police duties.
