The Town of Middlebury is in the heart of Champlain Valley, just east of Lake Champlain and bordered on the east by the Green Mountains and Green Mountain National Forest. If you enjoy outdoor recreation along with the desire to serve as an officer, this is the place to be! Downhill and Cross-country skiing, skating and ice hockey, ice fishing are all here. Summer and Fall activities include hiking, fishing, hunting and a variety of other activities. Lake Champlain provides deep water fishing for salmon and lake trout and warm water species - bass and pike abound. Kayaking and canoeing on Otter Creek are also popular. The three public schools- elementary, junior high, and high school have full range of educational and sports and arts programs. The recreation department provides year-round opportunities for team and individual sports. The Town is served by Amtrack, a General Aviation airport, bus service, and values higher education. It is the home of Middlebury College and a branch of the Community College of Vermont.

The Town is an old New England town- yet new- having recently invested heavily in infrastructure- rebuilding its downtown and building a new police station, two new fire stations and a new municipal building.

The police department has served the town for 120 years and is well supported by the community. The department is staffed with 16 officers - the Chief, 4 sergeants, 2 detectives, an SRO, and 8 patrol officers in addition to dispatchers and other non-sworn staff. While much of the staff is "homegrown," many officers have migrated here from outside of Vermont, electing to make homes here and raise families.

Officers are represented by the New England Police Benevolent Association, their collective bargaining unit. Officers enjoy a defined benefit retirement plan based on years of service, have excellent health insurance through MVP and dental insurance through Delta Dental. The Department is staffed 24 x 7.  Officers work 12-hour shifts, generally 3 on/4 off and 4 on/3 off.  This provides weekends off at least twice a month.

If you are seeking a great quality of life, police work in an atmosphere of little violence in an appreciative community- this is the place for you!
