The Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) Department of Public Safety offers a distinct, service-centered approach to law enforcement within our 84-acre Academic Medical Center, nestled in the historic Charleston peninsula. Unlike many traditional college campuses, we don't manage dormitories or sports teams;instead, we protect a diverse academic and healthcare community across six medical colleges, from the College of Nursing to the College of Medicine.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen.
  • At least 21 years of age.
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • No felony convictions or crimes of moral turpitude.
  • No defaults on government or student loans.
  • Must be able to:
  1. Perform effectively in a multicultural, educational environment.
  2. Communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  3. Maintain firearms qualification.
  • Must have or be able to obtain:
  1. Valid South Carolina driver’s license.
  2. South Carolina voter registration.
  3. Commission Certification as a South Carolina State Constable with SLED.

 

Job Description

  • Patrol designated areas to protect the MUSC community.
  • Respond to dispatched incidents and conduct preliminary investigations.
  • Perform follow-up investigations when necessary.
  • Enforce local, state, and federal laws.
  • Prepare detailed incident reports, arrest/search warrants, and other required documentation.
  • Participate in court proceedings as needed.
  • Apprehend, escort, and maintain custody of individuals for jail, court, or detention transport.
  • Conduct searches and arrests in accordance with laws governing arrest, search, and seizure.
  • Collaborate with the MUSC community using a problem-solving approach to enhance campus safety and wellness.
  • Assist with special events as required.
  • Maintain personal and departmental equipment in good working order.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

 

Testing Requirements

  • Must be a US Citizen.
  • Be at least 21 years of age.
  • Have a high school diploma / GED.
  • Have never been convicted of a felony or crime of moral turpitude
  • Have not defaulted on a government or student loan

 

Must be able to:

  • Effectively perform in a multi-cultural, educational environment
  • Communicate effectively in both written and verbal formats.
  • Maintain Firearms qualification.

 

Have or be able to obtain a valid:

  • South Carolina driver’s license.
  • South Carolina Voter Registration.

Commission Certification as a SC State Constable with SLED

Required to successfully complete:

  • Psychological evaluation.
  • Pre-employment background check.
  • Pre-employment credit check.
  • Completion of the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy.
  • Physical Agility Test (PAT) for non-certified
  • Pre-Academy and Main Academy for non-certified
  • Special Basic Certification for out-of-state certified
  • Departmental Field Training Program
  • Twelve-month University probationary period

    Physical Requirements:
  • Ability to stand/walk for extended periods of time. (Continuous)
  • Ability to lift materials up to 50 lbs, unassisted. (Infrequent)
  • Ability to lift, drag, and pull persons to safety, weighing up to 300 lbs., assisted. (Infrequent)
  • Ability to hear and recognize various alarms, verbal summons, and other sounds within noisy background areas. (Continuous)
  • Ability to maintain 20/40 vision in both eyes, corrected. (Continuous)
  • Ability to climb stairs to the top floor of any institution's building. (Infrequent)
  • Olfactory sense must be intact to smell unusual odors. (Continuous)
  • Ability to carry heavy objects, i.e., persons, a distance of 15 to 20 feet in emergency situations. (Infrequent)
  • Ability to engage in physical confrontations with suspected offenders. (Infrequent) Ability to run for extended distances. (Infrequent)
  • Ability to sit/drive a patrol vehicle for extended periods. (Continuous) Ability to ride a bicycle for extended periods. (Continuous)
  • Ability to kneel. (Infrequent) Ability to bend. (Frequent)
  • Ability to climb ladders. (Infrequent) Ability to work are heights at maximum height of buildings within institution boundaries. (Frequent)
  • Ability to sit for extended periods while operating a patrol vehicle. (Continuous) Additional New Requirements:
  • Ability to work overtime as required.
