Job Announcement:
The Animal Shelter Assistant serves as the first point of contact for visitors, adopters, and volunteers at our animal shelter and adoption center. This role provides outstanding customer service, manages administrative tasks, and supports daily operations to ensure a welcoming, efficient, and compassionate environment for people and animals alike.
Job Duties in Order of Importance
CUSTOMER SERVICE:
Greet visitors, adopters, and volunteers in a friendly and professional manner.
Answer phone calls, emails, and in-person inquiries regarding adoptions, lost/found animals, volunteer opportunities, and shelter services.
Schedule adoption appointments, veterinary check-ups, and intake evaluations as needed.
Provide accurate information about animals available for adoption and shelter policies.
ADMINISTRATIVE SUPPORT:
Maintain accurate records of adoptions, animal intakes, donations, and volunteer hours.
Process adoption paperwork, fees, and receipts in accordance with shelter procedures.
Assist with data entry, filing, and maintaining shelter databases and adoption software.
Help prepare reports, adoption packets, and promotional materials.
Assist in developing policies and procedures
INMATE SUPERVISION:
Accompany inmates from the jail to the shelter.
Oversee the inmates for the performance of kennel care and other cleaning duties daily.
MONEY HANDLING:
Collects fees for adoptions and dog tags.
Sells retail items in the lobby.
Collects fees for dangerous dog housing, pick up fees and surrender fees.
Insures that all monies collected are accurate and accounted for properly
Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Acceptable Characteristics
Able to operate computers, calculators, adding machines, copiers, fax machines and other common office equipment.
Able to deal with the public, fellow staff and detainees in a professional, clear and courteous manner at all times.
Must have good inter-personal skills and be able to establish and maintain positive effective working relationships with co-workers.
Must have working knowledge of county and office used computer programs by the end of probation.
Must support the goals and objectives of the LCSO.
Able to follow oral and written instructions.
Able to stand on concrete floor for long periods of time.
Able to sit for extended period of time.
Able to frequently lift/move 50 pounds or more combined with bending or twisting and occasionally lift/move 100 pounds or more.
High School Diploma or GED
General knowledge of the operations of the LCSO
Pass all LCSO general employment requirements.
Have reliable transportation.
WORKING HOURS:
2-8 HOURS PER DAY, 22-30 HOURS PER WEEK, 5 DAYS PER WEEK
Tues – Sat to start, expected to switch to Thurs – Mon after established.
Starting minimum hours are anticipated to be as follows:
Tues 8-10
Wed 8-10
Thurs 11-5
Fri 11-5
Sat 8-2
Additional hours, up to 30 total, may be available
