HIRING ANNOUNCEMENT – EMERSON POLICE DEPARTMENT
Now Accepting Applications for
POLICE OFFICER
The Emerson Police Department is hiring for the position of police officer. Applications are being accepted until Monday, September 27, 2021. The process will close on the deadline provided or when the first 200 applications have been received.
Police Training Commission (PTC) is preferred, however will not be absolute requirement for the position.

Below is the timeline for the hiring process. There are 8 elements that must be satisfied for hiring consideration. Each element must be met fully to reach the next phase of testing. Failure to meet any of the criteria will result in elimination from the process. Each phase of the process is competitive, with only the highest independent scores moving forward after each phase.
The elements of the Emerson Police Department hiring process are:
- Written Examination
- Physical Agility Testing
- Police Interview
- Police Committee Interview
- Background Check
- Council Meeting/ Conditional Term of Employment
- Psychological Testing
Medical Clearance
Written Examination
The written exam is limited to the first 200 applicants. The test site is the Bergen County Law and Public Safety Institute Hall of Heroes located at 281 Campgaw Road Mahwah, N.J. 07640. The test will be administered and proctored by the New Jersey Police Chief Association on Friday, October 1, 2021. The doors open at 5:30 p.m. and the test begins promptly at 6:00 p.m. Applicants who arrive late will be disqualified from the process. Cell phones and any other electronic devices are prohibited in the test site. All applicants must wear a face covering or masks to be allowed entry to the academy. Those who arrive without a face covering will be disqualified from the process. There will be no study guides available.
Physical Agility Exam
The top seventy-five (75) scores or however many pass (whichever is lower) from the written test will move on to the Physical Agility Exam. Those moving on will be notified by phone, email or U.S. mail. Those who do not move on will be notified by email only. Be sure to list an accurate email address on the test registration.
The Emerson Police Department is expected to hire two (2) police officers from the testing cycle to meet the immediate administrative needs of the Department.
The Physical Agility Exam will be scheduled for Saturday October 16, 2021 at the Bergen County Law and Public Safety Institute located at 281 Campgaw Road Mahwah, N.J. 07430. There will be two (2) times for the testing at 7:00 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. Testing begins promptly at 7:00 a.m. or 10:30 a.m.- those who arrive late will be immediately disqualified from any further participation in the process. Notification will be made of the testing time to the applicants by email or phone.
You must bring the signed waiver from a doctor and the physical examination release form with you to the physical agility exam. Failure to produce the signed waivers will result in termination from the process.
Minimum requirements to be eligible for hire as a Police Officer in the Emerson Police Department are as follows:
- Be a citizen of the United States
- Is sound in body and of good health sufficient to satisfy the board of trustees of the Police and Fireman’s retirement system of New Jersey as to his/her eligibility for membership in the retirement system.
- New Jersey resident
- Possess a valid New Jersey driver’s license
- Read, write and speak English
- Possess a Bachelor’s Degree (minimum 4 years) in an accredited college or possess an Associate’s degree (minimum 2 years) in an accredited college with a minimum of 2 years of military service OR have a minimum of 4 years of military service
The top twenty (20) scores from the Physical Agility Exam will move on to the Police Interview process. Those moving on will be notified by phone or email. Those who do not move on will be notified by email.
The Police Interview will take place between October 25th – 29th 2021 at the Emerson Municipal Building located at 1 Municipal Place Emerson, N.J. 07630. The applicant will be contacted by phone to receive the date and time of their interview. Those moving on will be notified by phone or email. Those who do not move on will be notified by email.
The top ten(10) applicants will move on to the background check portion. Those moving forward will be notified to pick up the full Emerson Police Department application starting on Friday October 29, 2021 or Saturday October 30, 2021. The Emerson Police Department is open twenty-four (24) hours. Fully submitted applications are due back to the Emerson Police Department no later than 4:00 p.m. Wednesday November 3, 2021. Applicants that turn in their applications late or incomplete will be disqualified from the process.
The top ten (10) applicants will move to the Police Committee Interview section. The interviews will take place on November 15th – November 19th, 2021 at the Emerson Municipal Building located at 1 Municipal Place Emerson, N.J. 07630. The applicant will be contacted by phone to receive the date and time of their interview. Those moving on will be notified by phone or email. Those who do not move on will be notified by mail.
The top three (3) applicants will be scheduled for an interview with the Emerson Mayor and Council in late November or Early December 2021. The finalists will be given a Conditional Offer of Employment pending a successful outcome of a psychological examination, a Health and Occupational Safety exam and the Bergen County Police Academy screening. The applicant will be scheduled for a psychological examination and a Health and Occupational Safety exam during the week following the Mayor and Council interview. In the event that an applicant is disqualified as a result of the psychological or the Health and Occupational examinations, the next eligible candidate will be scheduled for the above testing. The candidate will also be required to pass the Bergen County Police Academy Pre-Assessment Physical scheduled in January 2022.
The selected candidate will be sworn in and given a conditional term of employment in a December 2021 meeting of the Borough of Emerson Mayor and Council, for any candidate that is not fully PTC certified(no waivers), the Bergen County Law and Public Safety Institute Basic Police Officer class begins in January 2022.
