The Duluth Police Department is seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Crime Scene Technician / Property Custodian (CST/PC) to join our team. This civilian position plays a crucial role in the investigation and prosecution of crimes by ensuring the proper identification, documentation, collection, and preservation of evidence. The CST/PC is also responsible for the secure transport, storage, and disposal of evidence and property in accordance with department policies and legal requirements.
Job Responsibilities

Examine crime scenes for physical evidence, including fingerprints, biological materials, projectiles, and tool marks.

Document crime scenes using detailed notes, photographs, sketches, and video recordings.

Collect, process, and classify evidence using specialized techniques and equipment.

Maintain chain of custody and ensure integrity of evidence for court proceedings.

Respond to subpoenas and testify in court regarding crime scene investigations and evidence.

Test and analyze substances for the presence of controlled materials.

Operate city vehicles to respond to crime scenes and transport evidence.

Assist officers, detectives, and other law enforcement personnel as needed.

Maintain property and evidence storage areas and conduct regular inventory audits.

Attend training and departmental meetings to stay updated on best practices.

Be available for emergency callouts and crime scene response.
Qualifications

Must be at least 18 years of age.

High school diploma or GED required; coursework in criminal justice, forensic science, chemistry, or biology preferred.

Valid Georgia Driver’s License required.

Must pass a background investigation, drug test, and polygraph.

Ability to maintain confidentiality and comply with legal requirements regarding criminal justice information.

Strong organizational, record-keeping, and report-writing skills.

Ability to work independently and in a team under high-pressure conditions.

Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
Preferred Qualifications
-
Prior experience in law enforcement, forensic science, or crime scene investigation.

Knowledge of federal and state laws, rules of evidence, and crime scene processing techniques.

Certifications or coursework in fingerprint analysis, crime scene processing, forensic photography, or related fields.

Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and forensic software.

Training in bloodborne pathogens, evidence handling, and property management.
Physical & Work Environment
-
Work is performed in an office, lab, property room, and outdoor crime scenes.

Requires standing, walking, climbing, crawling, kneeling, and lifting heavy objects.

May involve exposure to hazardous materials, inclement weather, infectious diseases, and stressful situations.

Requires use of personal protective equipment (PPE) when necessary.
-
On-call availability may be required for major crime scenes and investigations.
