Calais Police Department

Calais is home to 3,123 residents and services a regional population of 15,000. Calais has worked to bolster its economy by revitalization of its downtown. Calais is designated as a HUB zone for economic development. Calais has a remarkable endowment of historic buildings and natural beauty. The quality of life is further enhanced by the availability of an array of community facilities including a regional hospital, Washington County Community College (formerly WCTC), numerous parks and recreational facilities.
The police department handles approximately 1500 calls for service annually. We work closely with US Customs and Border Patrol, with three border crossings into Canada within the City of Calais.
Requirements:
- Candidates must hold a valid Maine driver’s license.
- Must be at least 21 years of age.
- hold a high school diploma, or GED equivalent.
- Candidates who have made the final selection may be required to successfully complete the physical agility test (MCJA Standard) and must pass a thorough background investigation, which includes a polygraph, psychological, and financial examination.

- General patrol duties
- Investigating criminal complaints
- Traffic enforcement

Testing Requirements:
- New officers are required to take the ALERT test through the Maine Criminal Justice Academy
- Physical agility test
- Background investigation
- Polygraph
- Psychological exam
- Lateral transfers are not required to take the written exam. Additional training as necessary based upon experience.
