SLEO II POLICE OFFICER (Seasonal)

The Brigantine Police Department is currently accepting applicants for the position of SLEO II police officer. The successful candidate is highly motivated, well organized, self-directed professional who embraces new challenges, and collaborates well with team members, accepts responsibility and; exhibits excellent oral and written communication skills. In the past, successful SLEO Class II police officers have been hired, and promoted, to Full Time Police Officers, when the position was available. The appointment as a SLEO II police officer does not guarantee the appointment as a full-time police officer.

 

GENERAL DUTIES

Attend and successfully complete the SLEO II/Basic Course for Police Officers co-mingled academy (tentatively scheduled for February of 2025 at the Gloucester County Police Academy). *Applicants who already possess a valid NJ SLEO II police officer certification are exempt from the above.

 

  • SLEO II police officers are certified to carry the departmental issued firearm while on duty. The general duties assigned to our Class II Special Law Enforcement Officers are more commonly foot patrol, beach patrol (utilizing ATV’s and 4x4 patrol vehicles, and some motor patrol assignments. Officers are tasked with responding to calls for police services, initiating proactive police/civilian contacts, the enforcement of New Jersey Criminal Violations (Title 2C), Motor Vehicle Law (Title 39) as well as Brigantine’s Municipal Local Ordinances. Additionally, officers will be required to collect information related to civil and criminal investigations, complete reports related to those investigations, secure witnesses, crime scenes, evidence, processing of arrests, to include fingerprinting and photographing of offenders, testify in criminal proceedings and provide for municipal court security.  SLEO II police officers will supplement the patrol squads of the Brigantine Police Department and will work alongside full-time officers as well as mentor SLEO I officers. SLEO II police officers must be able to work a full time 10-hour shift schedule during the summer season and MAY be asked to work a 20-hour part time schedule during the winter season.

 

SALARY

  • SLEO II police officers start at $20/hour with increases in the hourly rate for subsequent years up to $30/hour.

 

ABOUT THE CITY OF BRIGANTINE

  • The City of Brigantine is an island located north of Atlantic City in Atlantic County, NJ. The population in the winter hovers around 9500 full-time residents with that number increasing to well over 30,000 residents in the summer.
  • The department is staffed with 35 full-time police officers with an anticipated four to six SLEO II officers and up to 10 SLEO I officers.
  • The call volume in the winter season is drastically lower than the call volume in the summer season. This necessitates the utilization of special officers in the summer season.
  • The police department patrols approximately five miles of beachfront from the State of New Jersey wildlife management area to the south end of the Cove Beach.
  • Brigantine allows motor vehicles to drive on the beach with a valid permit 24 hours a day 365 days a year. The police department is responsible for the safety and security of the residents and visitors who utilize the beach as well as the city.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Applicants must possess the following minimum qualifications:

  • Citizen of the United States and a resident of the State of New Jersey prior to appointment;
  • 18 years of age;
  • High School graduate or GED;
  • Must possess good moral character and a strong work ethic;
  • Must be in good mental and physical health;
  • No prior law enforcement experience is required
  • Valid New Jersey Driver’s License
  • Applicants must pass a pre-employment and pre-academy physical fitness assessment (see below)

 

TESTING REQUIREMENTS

-       Vertical Jump: 15 inches

-       1 Minute Sit-up: 28 repetitions

-       300 Meter Run: 70.1 seconds or less

-       1 Minute Push-up: 24 repetitions

-       1.5 Mile Run: 15:55 minutes or less

  • Medical Clearance (to participate in the Physical Fitness Assessment)
  • Physical Fitness Assessment (departmental and pre-academy)
  • Oral Interview (upon successful completion of the Physical Fitness Assessment)
  • Comprehensive Background Investigation (upon successful completion of the Oral Interview)
  • Comprehensive Physical exam/Drug Screening
  • Psychological Examination
  • Successful completion of the SLEO II police academy (if applicable).
