POLICE OFFICER

Minimum Requirements:

  • attaining the age of 21;
  • the successful completion of high school or equivalent;
  • successful completion of the basic training program approved by the MPTC;
  • successful completion of a physical and psychological fitness evaluation approved by the POST Commission;
  • successful completion of a state and national background check;
  • passage of the POST Commission approved LEO Examination (unless hired under the provisions of M.G.L. c.31, § 59A(c);
  • possession of current first aid and CPR certificates or equivalent;
  • successful completion of an oral interview administered by the POST Commission;
  • be of good moral character and fit for employment in law enforcement, as determined by the POST Commission.
  • Possess an active driver’s license and obtain an unrestricted LTC

Job Description/General Duties:

Patrol Officers perform a variety of law enforcement duties including responding to emergency and non-emergency calls for service, investigating crimes and motor vehicle crashes, conducting proactive patrols, enforcing traffic laws, making arrests, and preparing written reports. Officers are expected to interact professionally with residents, businesses, and visitors while maintaining a strong commitment to community policing and public service.

Officers patrol the community by marked cruiser, bicycle, foot, or other specialized assignments to deter criminal activity and maintain public safety. Additional responsibilities may include court appearances, community engagement, assisting neighboring agencies, and participating in department training programs.

The department offers opportunities for specialized assignments and career development including Detective Bureau, School Resource Officer (SRO), Drone Unit, K9, Mountain Bike and eBike Patrol, field training, and other specialty positions.

Successful candidates should possess strong communication skills, sound judgment, professionalism, integrity, and the ability to work effectively in a team-oriented environment serving a diverse suburban community.

Testing Requirements:

  • MPTC practice fitness test, no written exam

Hiring Process:

Candidates will first complete the MPTC practice fitness test. If a candidate passes the fitness exam, they will be given an initial interview. Selected candidates will then interview with our Police Chief, Assistant Chief, and Patrol Captain.

Conditional offers of employment will be made pending completion of a background investigation, physical examination, psychological examination, and drug test. Final selected candidates will then attend and successfully complete a 22–24 week police academy.
