The Allendale Police Department is a state accredited law enforcement agency serving a suburban community in northern Bergen County. The department consists of 16 sworn police officers comprised of three main divisions: Administration, Investigations, and Patrol.  The department is structured to include a Chief of Police, Lieutenant, Sergeants, Detectives, Patrol Officers, and Class Three Special Law Enforcement Officers (SLEO III).

Patrol follows a Pitman Schedule, which allows for every other weekend off.  Currently, the department has officers assigned to the Bergen County Rapid Deployment Force, the Bergen County Regional Swat Team Crisis Negotiations Team, and the Bergen County Police Academy as Recruit Instructors.  The department permits neatly groomed beards and implements a Workout on Duty policy. 

The Allendale Police department offers a minimum hourly compensation rate and minimum paid hours for outside overtime. Officers are provided with competitive pay and benefits, options for a Deferred Compensation Plan, and payment into Social Security.

Minimum Requirements:

  • U.S. Citizenship
  • H.S. Diploma/equivalent
  • Resident of the State of New Jersey
  • Valid NJ Driver's License with acceptable driving history
  • Age: 18-35
  • In good health sufficient to satisfy the board of trustees of the Police and Firemen’s Retirement system of New Jersey as to his eligibility for membership in the retirement system.
  • Able to read, write and speak the English language well and intelligently.
  • Possesses good moral character and has not been convicted of any criminal offense involving moral turpitude

Hiring Process

  • PHASE 1 (Written Exam)
    The multiple-choice written exam will take place on September 9, 2026 at 6pm at the Allendale Community Center (210 West Crescent Avenue, Allendale NJ). The doors will open at 530pm.

  • PHASE 2 (Physical Fitness Exam)
    Those moving on to this phase will be notified via PoliceApp. DO NOT call the Police Department for results.
    The physical fitness exam will take place on September 26, 2026 at 7am at Golz Chiropractic Center (794 Franklin Avenue, Suite #204, Franklin Lakes, NJ). The doors will open at 6am. The 1.5-mile run will be conducted immediately after at the Bergen County Law and Public Safety Institute (281 Campgaw Road, Mahwah, NJ).
    You must bring ALL physical assessment paperwork and $65 exact cash. Running shoes and proper attire are required.
    The following are the minimum requirements to pass:
    • EVENT MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
    • VERTICAL JUMP 15 INCHES
    • PUSH-UPS 24 IN 1 MINUTE
    • SIT-UPS 28 IN 1 MINUTE
    • 300 METER RUN 70.1 SECONDS OR LESS
    • 1.5 MILE RUN 15.55 MINUTES OR LESS
  • PHASE 3 (Command Staff Interviews)
    Those moving on to this phase will be notified via PoliceApp. DO NOT call the Police Department for results.
    Selected candidates will be interviewed by the Allendale Police Department Command Staff. Dates are expected to be in October.
  • PHASE 4 (Public Safety Committee Interviews)
    Those moving on to this phase will be notified via PoliceApp. DO NOT call the Police Department for results.
    Selected candidates will be interviewed by the Borough’s Public Safety Committee. Dates are expected to be in October.
  • PHASE 5 (Background Investigation and Medical Assessments)
    Those receiving a conditional offer of employment will complete a Background Investigation packet and be assigned a Background Investigator. Medical assessment includes the following: medical exam, psychological exam, and drug testing.

**The Bergen County Police Academy Class is expected to start in January 2027**
