GENERAL INFORMATION

This position, E-911 Call Taker (Job Opening #620966), is open to all State employees and external applicants.

This is a temporary position. Temporary work is typically for variable hours, and is not expected to be full-time. The State does not guarantee 40 hours of work per week. Please note that multiple positions in the same work location may be filled from this job posting.

GENERAL JOB DESCRIPTION

Work at a Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP) in the Department of Public Safety involving the operation of specialized equipment to receive and transfer enhanced 911 emergency calls, the interviewing of callers to determine the nature and location of the emergency, and the transferring of the voice or data to another agency for dispatch or service. An incumbent must maintain expert knowledge of emergency response terminology and the laws, rules, standards, policies, and procedures applicable to providing enhanced 911 service, and must understand the relationships among all classes of PSAP in the system. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Telecommunicator Supervisor.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

High School diploma or equivalent AND two (2) years or more of experience as a non-emergency dispatcher or a radio operator, or any work experience that includes significant contact with the public, such as a welfare eligibility worker or interviewer, counter or rental clerk, bill or account collector, credit checker, answering service call taker, receptionist, or travel clerk.

OR One (1) year or more in the emergency telecommunication field, or as an emergency dispatcher or telecommunicator.

OR Two years or more of full time college coursework study or an associate's degree or higher.

Note: Certification by the E-911 Board as a Telecommunicator is required within six months of entry into the job.

Note: All candidates must pass a security clearance conducted by the Department of Public Safety including a motor vehicle and criminal background check. Applicants' fingerprints will be taken and submitted for examination to confirm identity.
