Ruston Police Department serves a population of approximately 22,000 people. The City of Ruston is home to Louisiana Tech University and neighbors Grambling State University.

Ruston Police Department strives for Communications Officers to be well equipped and well trained. 

Minimum Requirements:

  • Must be not less than eighteen (18) years of age.
  • Must have graduated from high school or possess a certificate equivalent to a high school diploma issued by the State Department of Education.  Experience in an allied field may be substituted year for year if judged adequate by the Board.
  • After offer of employment, but before beginning work in this class, must pass a medical examination prepared and administered by the Appointing Authority, designed to demonstrate good health and physical fitness sufficient to perform the essential duties of the position, with or without accommodation.

Job Description/General Duties:

Employees in positions of this class perform entrance-level work in operating communications
equipment, keeping records, and other duties in the communications center of the police
department. They answer telephones, dispatch Police & Fire Units, and keep simple records of
these activities following department procedures. Duties of this class are non-supervisory in
nature and require the ability to act independently following standard operating
procedures. Communications officers report to and have work reviewed by the Communications Supervisor.

Testing Requirements:

Applicants must have a passing score (min. of 75) prior to applying.  The Civil Service Test for Competitive Applicants is administered by the Louisiana Office of State Examiner.  Test may be taken online.  If you do not have a current passing Civil Service Test score, please visit the website below and select "Entrance Police Communications".

Hiring Process:

Applicants may be contacted for a pre-interview to discuss their application.  Applicants will be asked to complete a Digital Voice Stress Analysis Interview.
