Howard County will be conducting typing tests for the position of Emergency Communications Operator (9-1-1 Dispatcher). Essential duties include taking emergency calls and dispatching Police and Fire (EMS). Customer service and computer experience is desirable. All positions will work the following shifts: two days 7AM to 7PM; two nights 7PM to 7AM; four days off.

Who We Are

Howard County Emergency Communications Operators (ECOs) take emergency and non-emergency calls and dispatch police, fire, and EMS from the county’s newly renovated 911 center. We are the public safety answering point 24 hours/day, seven days/week.

To be considered for employment, you must meet the following standards:

  • Possess a high school diploma or GED
  • Possess a clear criminal record
  • Must be a Citizen of the United States

Successful candidates must satisfactorily complete the following: 

  • Typing test at 30 wpm
  • Video Dispatch Test
  • 3 hour observation of the 9-1-1 Dispatch Center
  • Panel interview
  • Background investigation
  • Psychological screening
  • Pre-placement physical

Typing Test Dates: 

An application must be completed in order to preregister for the typing test.

Tuesday, September 8- 5, 5:30, 6, 6:30, 7:00 pm

Thursday, September 10- 5, 5:30, 6, 6:30, 7:00 pm

Friday, September 11- 9, 9:30, 10, 10:30, 11, 11:30 am & 1, 1:30, 2, 2:30, 3:00 pm

Video Test Dates:

Applicants who successfully pass the typing test with a 30 NET words-per-minute score will be scheduled for a video test.

Thursday, October 1- 5:00 pm

Friday, October 2- 9:00 am & 1:00 pm
