EXAMPLE OF DUTIES:
The Telecommunications Operator, Public Safety, plays a vital role in emergency response operations, serving as the first point of contact for individuals in crisis. This position requires strong communication skills, the ability to remain calm under pressure, and a commitment to public service.
Daily responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:
- Answering emergency and non-emergency phones and transmits information to appropriate personnel.
- Monitoring telephones, radio and other electronic equipment in the Dispatch Center.
- Dispatching Law Enforcement, Fire or EMS as appropriate, maintaining on-going contact with the responding personnel keeping them up to date on new information as it comes in.
- Maintaining on-going contact with the caller, providing life-saving instructions as appropriate until emergency personnel arrive.
- Provide life-saving instructions when necessary
- Accurately document all calls and activities in the computer-aided dispatch (CAD) system
- Strong experience in public contact or customer service
- Ability to remain calm and focused in high-stress situations.
- Availability to work rotating shifts, including weekends and holidays
Must successfully complete practical testing
Computer proficiency preferred

RECRUITMENT PROCESS:
- Applicants must be at least 18 years old at time of application submission.
- Applicants will be invited to participate in software program practical tests. Must also be able to type 25 words per minute.
- Applicants passing the practical tests will be invited to an oral panel interview.
- Applicants certified by the State of Connecticut as a Telecommunications Operator preferred.
