The Department of Children Youth and Families: Division of Youth Development is currently seeking candidates for its 32nd Rhode Island Training School Pre-Service Academy.

General statement of duties:

The Juvenile Program Worker is a uniformed staff position that provides for the care, custody, supervision, and security of the youth incarcerated in the Rhode Island Training School. The Rhode Island Training School is a juvenile correctional facility for adolescent males and females. Duties also include assisting in the rehabilitation, education, treatment of the residents as well as doing related work as required.

Minimum Qualifications and Educational Requirements:

Qualified applicants must possess the following minimum qualifications:

  • 21 years or older
  • Possess a valid Rhode Island driver’s license.
  • Possession of an associate degree or successful completion of 60 credits from an accredited college program with specialization in a Behavioral Science, Criminal Justice or in Social Work; and
  • One (1) year of employment in a responsible position in a clinical or justice treatment facility working directly with clients/inmates, or two (2) years of continuous active-duty military service with an honorable discharge or six (6) years of National Guard/Reserve with an honorable discharge;
  • Or, any combination of education and experience that shall be substantially equivalent to the above education and experience.
  • Experience working with adolescent youth preferred.

  • Subject to a Child Protective Services background clearance
  • Subject to Drug Screening
  • Successfully pass a Physical Fitness Agility Battery (PFAB) Exam using the PFAB Standards for Physical Fitness
  • Participate in first and second interviews with multi-disciplinary teams
  • Subject to Psychological screening

All qualified applicants must complete a 8-week Pre-Service Training Academy (40 hours a week) at a current rate of $800.00 per week that includes trainings in, but are not limited to:

  • Security Procedures
  • Situational Awareness/Officer Safety
  • Supervision
  • De-escalation and Restraint Techniques
  • Juvenile Rights
  • Emergency Procedures, CPR/AED/First Aid
  •  Interpersonal Communication Skills
  • Hiatt Tactical Handcuffing

After graduating from the Pre-Service Training Academy candidates may be placed on a hiring list and offered employment upon positions becoming available.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

At the time of appointment applicants must be capable of performing (with or without reasonable accommodation) the essential duties as evidenced by a physician's certificate and must continue to be qualified to perform assigned duties through employment.  Must have successfully completed and graduated from Department of Children, Youth and Families Juvenile Corrections Pre-Service Training Program. In accordance with RIGL 42-28.3-1 no person shall be appointed temporary, probationary, or permanent until they have been evaluated and tested by a certified psychologist and receive a satisfactory rating in writing.
