General Statement of Job
Under the direct supervision of the Classifications Manager, performs work of a responsible and professional nature related to the classification and reclassification of inmates housed in the Walton County Jail. Work is performed in accordance with Sheriff's Office rules, regulations, policies and procedures. Incumbent exercises independent judgment in assigning appropriate inmate housing and must possess good interpersonal communication skills. The Classifications Specialist functions in cooperation with Inmate Records, Medical, Programs and security staff. Work is reviewed through observation and results obtained.
Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma, Florida General Education Development Test (GED), or out-of-state GED, with transcript of test results.
- Must be able to operate computer, printer, fax machine, copier, and telephone.
- Applicant must be able to multi-task.
Essential Job Functions

- Regular and prompt job attendance.
- Proficient in NCIC/FCIC.
- Capability to read and understand Criminal Histories- in and out of state.
- Interpersonal skills to manage inmates.
- Responsible for managing a caseload of inmates, including inmates in special status.
- Evaluates information from reports, interviews, and correspondence for recommendations for inmate custody classification and work/program assignments and reviews inmates for special status recommendation.
- Prepares classification and progress reports both scheduled and unscheduled.
- Updates logs to reflect inmate movement.
- Supervises and evaluates inmate progress and identifies inmates’ needs.
- Performs file audits to ensure the accuracy of an inmate’s file.
- Ensures all relevant information regarding gain time for inmate worker and program completion is updated on the jail management system.
- Maintains inmate information on the jail management system.
- Refers inmates to treatment and program services based on needs and risks.
- Observes and interacts with inmates at their work assignment, housing assignment and educational/vocational assignment.
- Visits the specialized housing units (confinement, medical, etc.) as necessary.
- Responds to inmate requests, correspondence and telephone inquiries.
- Attends mandatory and other training as required.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Interview and counsel inmates.
- Review and analyze data.
- Describe facts and events accurately.
- Apply laws, applicable rules and procedures.
- Plan, organize, and coordinate assignments.
- Communicate effectively.
- Use office computer applications.
- Work under stressful conditions.
- Deal with difficult individuals in a correctional setting.
Physical Abilities:
- Sit up to 6 hours per day
- Stand up 1 hour per day
- Walk up 2 hours per day
- Frequently lift up to 10 lbs.
- Occasionally lift up to 20 lbs.
- Frequently bend, reach, or twist
