COMMUNITY SERVICE OFFICER RECRUITMENT

The Town of Swansea police department is currently seeking to establish a list in order to hire per diem Community Service Officers (CSO’s).
The Community Service Officer (CSO) is non-sworn ancillary personnel assigned to perform the duties of traffic detail officer on roadway construction sites within the Town of Swansea. Their primary role is to augment the workforce of trained experienced law enforcement personnel available to assist the safe flow of vehicular and pedestrian traffic at roadway construction sites. The assignment of CSO shall be approved by the Chief of Police and appointed by the Board of Selectmen annually.
Qualifications/Requirements:
- Must be a U.S. Citizen
- Must be 18 years of age or older
- Must have a high school diploma or GED equivalent
- Must possess a valid driver’s license
- Must have reliable transportation
- Must be able to pass a pre-employment background check
- Be able to complete traffic control certification as required by the Chief of Police upon appointment. This requirement may be waived dependent on prior law enforcement experience as determined by the Chief of Police.
- Be able to purchase their own uniforms and equipment as required by the department upon appointment
- Law enforcement experience preferred, but not required
Successful candidates will be required to pass an oral interview and pre-employment “fitness for duty” examination from their primary care physician prior to appointment. This physical will be done at no cost to the Town of Swansea. This physical must be completed annually.
Salary/Benefits:
- Traffic detail rate is determined by police detail rates
- Police department related assignments are $25.00 per hour
Job Description/General Duties:
The essential functions or duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related or a logical assignment to the position.
- Directs and coordinates traffic around construction sites, during parades or emergencies using hand signals and signs at assigned locations, including manually directing traffic, operating traffic signal controls and placing and retrieving traffic cones and barricades to safely direct and control traffic flow as directed
- Community Service Officers shall be familiar with and conduct duties in accordance with the individual project’s Construction Zone Safety Plan; shall obey, without reservation, the regulations of the department and all lawful commands of police officers. Upon request by a Police Officer, Community Service Officers support, aid, and assist police officers in the lawful performance of their officer duties, within the scope of Community Service Officer duties
- Observes and reports hazardous conditions/situations to the appropriate designated police contact
- Answer questions regarding detours and renders assistance to motorists when appropriate on duty and where appropriate. Assists the public with information regarding directions, street locations, etc.
- Communicate with other Community Service Officers, police officers & construction personnel at the construction site
- Shall remain at the assigned location for the hours scheduled or until relieved
- Performs similar or related work as required or as situation dictates
Community Service Officers may be required to participate in community events and initiatives
