ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following.  Other duties may be assigned.

  1. Receives, categorizes, stores and maintains custody of a wide variety of evidence and property in accordance with applicable local, state and federal laws and regulations.
  2. Releases evidence and property to rightful owners upon authorization.
  3. Maintains comprehensive records related to evidence and property.
  4. Staffs the Property Room and assists the public in person and by telephone.
  5. Answering of telephone inquires.
  6. Performs other duties as directed or as the situation dictates.
  7. Uses a computer and applicable software to enter and maintain data and produce a variety of correspondence and reports.
  8. Assist with or provides for the transportation of evidence and property for physical analysis and/ or court proceedings.
  9. Checks court and Clark County Sheriff’s Office records for case dispositions.
  10. Disposes of evidence and property that no longer has evidentiary value.
  11. Transports evidence and property for destruction when it no longer has evidentiary value and cannot be returned to the rightful owner.
  12. To testify truthfully in all Courts in the State of Ohio.
  13. Proficient computer skills.
  14. Proficient writing skills.
  15. Interpersonal skills.
  16. Reading comprehension.
  17. Maintain professional behavior and attitude at all times when on duty, including high pressure or stressful situations.
  18. Operate a motor vehicle.
  19. May be required to log property during a search warrant.
  20. Maintain the confidentiality of sensitive law enforcement information.
  21. Knowledge of evidence chain of custody.
  22. Ability to safely handle firearms and weapons.
  23. Ability to work independently and with limited supervision.
  24. Ability to recognize and safely handle hazardous materials.
  25. Ability to work flexible hours.
  26. Any other duties assigned by the Sheriff.
  27. Must exhibit high moral and ethical standards.


To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.  The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required.


  1. Prior Law Enforcement experience preferred.
  2. High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
  3. Associate’s degree (A. A.) or equivalent from two-year college or technical school; or one year related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.  Documented and demonstrated academic achievements preferred.  College preferred.


Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures or governmental regulations.  Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.  Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.


Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.


  1. Ohio Drivers License (Valid, not under suspension)
  2. Documented and demonstrated academic achievement.
  3. Must be competent in the use of computers
  4. Must show proficiency in the standard reporting system.
  5. Prior Office experience preferred.
  6. High School Diploma or GED equivalent.

Generally, work is performed indoors. The employee is required to speak clearly and hear effectively.  The employee is occasionally required to stand, walk reach, stoop, and kneel for supplies and filing purposes.  The employee must occasionally lift and/ or move office and other departmental supplies.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus.  Employee may be exposed to dust, dirt and a variety of hazardous compounds, which may be found on property/ evidence to include materials contaminated by blood and other human products.
