Volunteer Internship Program Opportunity

Crime Analysis Unit - Northern Office

 

OBJECTIVE:

Provide supplemental civilian resources to assist the CCSO Crime Analyst with routine and specialized tasks to include:

  • reading and reviewing crime reports, CAD – calls for service reports, and other crime-related documents;
  • data entry, reconciliation, validations and performing queries of data stored within assorted law enforcement repositories;
  • development of assorted work-related products such as reports, maps, charts and bulletins;
  • creation of products for meetings and briefings as well as monthly and quarterly reports;
  • prepare and disseminate crime bulletins;
  • entry, sorting, and compilation of data into the ATACWorkstation analysis program; and
  • perform routine administrative functions as assigned.

 

CANDIDATE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

Undergraduate students, in good academic standing, are preferred.  Analytical skills are desired; thus, students enrolled in academic courses designed to develop such skills are encouraged to apply.  Suitable candidates will be able to:

  • demonstrate acceptable typing/keyboard skills;
  • follow simple and complex instructions relating to work assignments;
  • demonstrate some proficiency with MS Office software such as Excel, Powerpoint, Word and Access;
  • exhibit attention to detail; and
  • communicate clearly, both in writing and orally.

 

EXPECTATIONS:

Interns are expected to:

  • participate in the program for an entire semester;
  • work a minimum of 16 hours per week;
  • maintain regular and punctual attendance; and
  • participate in bi-weekly assessments.

 

 INTERN TAKE-AWAY

Upon completion of the Internship Program, the student will:

  • understand the functions and responsibilities of a crime analysis workgroup and its relationship to law enforcement crime suppression efforts, to include crime pattern/series identification methodology;
  • better understand criminal justice policies, procedures and practices;
  • recognize and understand the functions of various crime-related reports and documents;
  • possess a working knowledge of the Automated Tactical Analysis of Crime (ATAC) software;
  • better understand the spatial relationship of crime incidents through their work with GIS software;
  • retain samples of assignments completed during the semester; and
  • have developed a network of personnel contacts within the law enforcement community.

 

PROGRAM ELIGIBILITY

Intern applicants shall meet the following requirements to be eligible to participate in the program:

  • minimum of 18 years of age;
  • currently enrolled as a student in a post-secondary institution;
  • have written approval of a faculty advisor;
  • successful completion of an oral interview, background investigation and drug screen, liability waiver, and confidentiality agreement;
  • approval of the Sheriff

 

PROGRAM REJECTION/TERMINATION

Intern applicants may be rejected from the Volunteer Internship Program for any of the following reasons, including but not limited to:

  • felony of serious misdemeanor convictions;
  • questionable character or behavior;
  • failure to provide complete and/or accurate information for the background investigation;
  • failure to successfully complete any portion of the selection process.
