Records Technician/Crime Data Analyst   

City of Cambridge, Maryland 

 

Classification: Non-Exempt 

 

Pay Grade: 06 

 

Pay Range: $40,000.00 - $45,000.00

Job Summary: This position is general clerical work involving the performance of confidential and criminal data entry following well-defined procedures and instructions. In addition, completing crime analysis work in assisting our Office of Professional Standards officer with identifying and analyzing patterns and trends that works parallel to the Departments moto of Patrolling with Purpose. Work is performed under the supervision of the Chief of Police and Executive Assistant. This position would have flexibility in scheduling and once training has completed, the hours would not need to be during normal business hours. 

 

 

POSITION DESCRIPTION 

Assignments are routine in nature and are carried out in accordance with general work instructions and established clerical practices, procedures, and precedents including but not limited to the following: 

 

  • May compose and type routine forms and letters. 
  • Assist administrative personnel with clerical duties.  
  • Maintains court issued documents. 
  • Enters Warrants, Protective Orders and other documents that must be submitted into the Criminal Justice System and performs monthly validation on entries  
  • Will work directly with the Office of Professional Standards and Chief of Police with crime analysis in the departments vision to Patrol with Purpose 
  • Will work directly with the Detective Sergeant and Special Operations unit to assist with prevention of crime and crime trends 
  • Receives, sorts, and distributes incoming mail. 
  • Assembles meeting packets 
  • Answering and redirecting phone calls, responding to email, and taking messages 
  • Facilitating communications within an office and fielding interactions with the public 
  • Be available for entry of Warrants and Protective Orders after working hours 
  • Be able to work after regular business hours 
  • Preparing and managing correspondence, reports, and documents 
  • Organizing and coordinating office systems, files, and events 
  • Managing office supply inventory 
  • Greet visitors and direct them to the appropriate department 

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • Completion of high school including or supplemented with courses in computer operation, typing, shorthand or dictaphone training and other commercial subjects. 
  • Good knowledge of Business English, spelling, punctuation, and grammar. 
  • Knowledge of personal computer, WordPerfect and/or other common programs. 
  • Some knowledge of office practices, procedures, and equipment. 
  • Ability to type and take and transcribe dictation accurately at an acceptable rate of speed. 
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing. 
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the general public. 

 

WORKING CONDITIONS:   

Work is performed in a dynamic environment that requires the need to be sensitive to change and responsive to changing goals, priorities, and needs.  

  • Requires cardiovascular fitness to walk across properties, up and down flights of stairs daily at various locations and over varying terrain. 
  • Requires sufficient ambulatory ability to move about the office and outdoor field locations and to bend, stoop, reach, and climb. 
  • Requires the ability to alternatively sit and stand for sustained periods of time. 
  • Requires near and far visual acuity to read reports, printed material, computer screens, observe moving objects, and observe physical layouts. 
  • Requires manual and finger dexterity as well as hand-eye coordination to write and to operate computers and other office equipment. 
  • Requires the ability to hear and communicate verbally. 
  • Requires the ability to lift and carry light objects not expected to exceed 20 pounds.

LICENSE:   

Possession of or ability to obtain a valid "Class C" Maryland driver's license. Driver’s License is to be in good standing and acceptable by the City of Cambridge's insurance company. 

 

PRE-EMPLOYMENT 

All employment offers are contingent upon successful completion of both a pre-employment physical exam, including a drug/alcohol test, and a criminal background investigation, which involves fingerprinting.  

 

PROBATIONARY PERIOD 

All City of Cambridge employees are subject to a one (1) year probationary period provision as specified in the employee handbook. Probationary, temporary, provisional, and seasonal employees serve at the pleasure of the City and are "At-Will."
