ABOUT WPD
The Westminster Police Department is a full-service municipal law enforcement agency providing 24/7 coverage for our community. Our guiding principles include a commitment to policing that is community-oriented, problem-oriented, and data-driven.
WPD currently has forty-two (42) sworn police officers who hold the ranks of Police Officer, Police Officer First Class, Corporal, Sergeant, Lieutenant, Captain, Major/Deputy Chief, and Chief of Police. The Department is comprised of the Patrol Bureau and the Criminal Investigations Bureau. WPD features a K9 Unit, a Strategic Enforcement Unit, and long-term assignments with the Carroll County Drug and Firearms Trafficking Task Force and the Child Advocacy and Investigations Center. There are ample opportunities for training, certifications for specialty skills, and collateral duty assignments, including bicycle patrol, Crisis Intervention Team, Crash Reconstruction Unit, Crisis Response Team, and Crisis Negotiations Team.
WPD has thirteen (13) professional staff members who provide integral support throughout the Department. These valued members work in Communications and Dispatch Unit, the Body-Worn Camera program, the Auxiliary Police Unit, grant-funded outreach teams, administrative support, and college internships.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
- Be a United States citizen.
- Be 21 years of age at the time of appointment.
- Possess a high school diploma or GED certificate.
- Be eligible to possess a firearm.
- Possess a valid driver’s license.
- Have no felony or serious misdemeanor convictions; no DUI convictions within the last three (3) years.
- Meet the minimum standards set by the Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commissions (MPCTC).
- Be eligible to obtain a Maryland Training and Standards Commission Certification and Training Standards Compliance Card.
MPCTC DISQUALIFIERS
- Convicted of selling, manufacturing, or distributing a controlled dangerous substance, narcotic drug, or marijuana.
- Illegally sold, produced, cultivated, distributed, or transported a controlled dangerous substance, narcotic drug, or marijuana.
- Illegally used a controlled dangerous substance or narcotic drug within 36 months of an application for certification.
- Used Marijuana within 12 months of an application for certification.
- Used a controlled dangerous substance, narcotic drug, or marijuana while employed to enforce federal, state, or local law by any government agency.
- Used Heroin, Phencyclidine (PCP), Lysergic Acid Diethylamide (LSD).
- Used a controlled dangerous substance or narcotic drug, or any combination of controlled dangerous substances or narcotic drugs (excluding marijuana), a total of five or more times or one time since becoming 21 years old.
HIRING STEPS
Successful applicants must pass each of the following:
- Oral interview.
- Polygraph examination.
- Pre-employment background investigation.
- Upon receiving a conditional job offer, pass a psychological screening, drug screening, and physical examination / physical ability test.
