Excellent Starting Salary - Grade A Officer: $78,050

 

TO QUALIFY FOR THIS OPPORTUNITY:

  • Must be certified as a Police Officer/Trooper in the State of Connecticut*
  • Must have been employed as a Police Officer for at least 24 months.
  • Have NOT had more than two (2) years separation from a certified law enforcement unit.
  • Left in good standing from their previous law enforcement agency.
  • Must not be the subject of any pending administrative/IA or criminal investigations.
  • Have no history of making false, untruthful or inaccurate statements or reports, which could be considered as Giglio or Brady violations.
  • Must hold a valid CHIP Card

 

*OUT-OF-STATE LATERAL and MILITARY POLICE LATERAL TRANSFERS may also be considered!

Requirements for an Out-Of-State Lateral Transfer Candidate include

  • Must have been employed at least 2 years as certified Police Officer / Trooper.
  • Must not have experienced more than a 3-year break in service from a law enforcement unit. • Must possess a valid driver’s license.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Connecticut driver’s license by time of completion of Academy.
  • Must hold a valid CHIP Card

 

Requirements for a Military Lateral Transfer Candidate include

  • Must have been employed for at least 2 years in law enforcement.
  • Must have successfully completed an approved military training program accompanied by a DD214, DA1059, or NAVMC184.
  • Must have been honorably discharged or currently serving in a branch of the United States military.
  • Must have a minimum of 2 years of service as Military Police; The last date of service must be within 2 years.

 

Connecticut Certified State Troopers, Out-of-State Certified Police Officers, and Military Police that receive a conditional offer of employment will be required to successfully complete the process for Comparative Compliance with POSTC.                                                  

 

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

Under the direction and supervision of a police sergeant, a New Haven Police Officer protects the lives and property of citizens. Provides services to the public and maintains the peace, protects the rights of persons and property, and enforces all laws and ordinances coming under the jurisdiction of the Police Department. Under normal conditions, interacts with the public in a positive manner in accordance with a strong community policing philosophy. 

The City of New Haven has a population of 135,081 (2020 census) and has an area of over 20 square miles. We are one of Connecticut’s largest urban centers representing a major hub for business activity, architecture, culture, and entertainment. There are several multi-cultural neighborhoods and communities. The City’s diversity, various neighborhoods, vibrant community, culture, arts, and engaging citizenry all form The Elm City.

 

SPECIALIZED UNITS AND DIVISIONS:

IN-STATE LATERAL ENTRY APPLICANTS - REQUIREMENTS include:

  • Must hold a valid State of Connecticut POST (Police Officer) certification, which must be current at time of appointment, and maintain certification during course of employment.
  • Must have been employed and certified as a police officer in the State of Connecticut for at least 24 months, AND NOT have had more than 2 years of separation from a law enforcement unit.
  • Possess and maintain a valid Connecticut driver’s license.

 

OUT-OF-STATE LATERAL ENTRY APPLICANTS - REQUIREMENTS include:

  • Must have been employed for at least 2 years in law enforcement.
  • Must not have experienced more than a 3-year break in service from a law enforcement unit.
  • Must be able to meet and maintain throughout the course of employment established and ongoing physical, medical, and psychological requirements.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Connecticut driver’s license by time of completion of Academy.

One of the conditions of employment for an Out-Of-State Lateral will consist of the Comparative Certification process, performed on a case-by-case basis. POST certification must be maintained throughout the course of employment. 

 

MILITARY POLICE LATERAL ENTRY APPLICANTS - REQUIREMENTS include:

  • Must have been employed for at least 2 years in law enforcement.
  • Must have successfully completed an approved military training program accompanied by a DD214, DA1059, or NAVMC184.
  • Must have been honorably discharged or currently serving in a branch of the United States military.
  • Must have a minimum of 2 years of service as Military Police.
  • The last date of service must be within 2 years.

One of the conditions of employment for a Military Lateral will consist of the Comparative Certification process, performed on a case-by-case basis. POST certification must be maintained throughout the course of employment.

 

ALL EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS WILL BE VERIFIED. A BACKGROUND INVESTIGATION WILL BE CONDUCTED. FALSIFICATION OF ANY INFORMATION WILL AUTOMATICALLY DISQUALIFY YOU FROM FURTHER PARTICIPATION IN THE RECRUITMENT AND TESTING PROCESS.

 

EXAMINATION:

Open to all applicants who meet the above qualifications. Applicants meeting minimum qualifications will be reviewed and evaluated. 

It is critical that you complete the application thoroughly and submit information as outlined within the form, as the information you provide will be used to ascertain if you are eligible to move forward in the selection process. This information will be used to determine the exam eligibility list.

The civil service examination process will also consist of a written test. Post-offer process includes other examinations such as a physical ability test, a background investigation, a polygraph examination, a psychological examination, an interview with the Chief of Police, a physical exam, a drug test, and a working test/probationary period of one year. All parts of the testing and selection process are designed to determine the ability of applicants to learn and perform the duties of a Police Officer in a multi-culturally diverse environment.
