Job Announcement:
The Montclair Police Department is seeking a professional, community-focused SLEO III officer to serve as School Resource Officer at Montclair High School. This role centers on maintaining a safe learning environment, building positive relationships with students and staff, and providing rapid, effective response to school-based incidents.
SLEO III officer operates exclusively within the school, performing duties defined under New Jersey law for retired law-enforcement officers returning in a school-security capacity. The hours are consistent with the school district calendar.
Key Responsibilities:
- High-school safety operations — Maintain a visible, proactive security presence throughout Montclair High School’s campus, entrances, and common areas.
- Emergency response — Respond immediately to threats, disturbances, or emergencies occurring on school grounds.
- Student engagement — Build rapport with students to support trust, mentorship, and a positive school climate.
- Policy compliance — Enforce district safety protocols, visitor procedures, and emergency-drill requirements.
- Incident reporting — Document school-related incidents clearly and accurately.
- Collaboration with administrators — Work closely with high-school leadership and security staff to identify and address safety concerns.
- Conflict resolution — Use de-escalation strategies to manage student conflicts or emotionally charged situations.
- Training participation — Complete all required annual firearms, use-of-force, and SRO-specific training.
Minimum Qualifications:
Retired New Jersey law-enforcement officer in good standing, eligible under N.J.S.A. 40A:14-146.12.
Retired within the last three (3) years. Previously held full police powers and completed a full PTC-approved basic police academy. Ability to qualify semi-annually with a firearm under NJ AG guidelines. Successful completion of background check, psychological exam, and medical screening.
Strong communication skills and ability to work effectively with high-school-aged youth.
Compensation:
Hourly rate: $35–$45 per hour, based on experience. Sick time consistent with NJ Earned Sick Leave law.
