Salary: Starting at $65,874 annually
Signing Bonus: $5,000 (first $2,500 paid on date of hire)
Grade: P07A – Non-Exempt

Position Summary
The Deputy Sheriff First Class is a certified (or recently certified) law enforcement officer responsible for patrolling assigned areas, enforcing state and local laws, protecting life and property, responding to calls for service, conducting investigations, and engaging in proactive community policing.
This position is open only to currently certified or recently certified (within 2 years) law enforcement officers who meet Maryland MPCTC standards.
- In addition, candidates must have at least 12 months of continuous full-service law enforcement experience following academy graduation by the date of hire.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform full law enforcement duties and patrol assigned areas
- Respond to calls for service and conduct follow-up investigations
- Make arrests; process suspects; advise individuals of rights
- Prepare accurate reports, warrant applications, and documentation
- Testify in court as required
- Provide general public assistance
- Issue citations and serve warrants/summonses
- Participate in community outreach and crime prevention initiatives
- Uphold the agency’s Mission, Vision, and Values
- Perform additional duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications
U.S. Citizen
Required Certification & Experience
- Maryland (MPCTC) Law Enforcement Certification
- 12 months or more of continuous full-service LE experience after academy completion
- Currently in good standing with employing agency OR previously resigned in good standing
Education
Education
- High school diploma or GED recognized by the State Board of Education (COMAR-compliant)
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Working knowledge of criminal, motor vehicle, and county law
- Understanding of modern policing practices
- Ability to perform all essential law enforcement duties without restriction
- Basic first-aid knowledge
- Strong communication and professional interpersonal skills
- Familiarity with court procedures and evidence handling
Licenses & Requirements
- Valid driver’s license (no more than 4 points)

- Must meet agency physical agility and medical standards
