The Berlin Police Department is a small agency serving a small community of approximately 6000 residents. However, being a member of a small agency allows you the opportunity to have a big impact. In our small department we have programs from Drone Operations, Crash Reconstruction, K9, Simunitions Instruction and Training, Bicycle Unit, Computer Voice Stress Test Operator, and more.

We accomplish this goal by maintaining a close relationship with members of the community, local business owners, and our Town's government officials. The Town of Berlin is home to approximately 6000 residents in the area of approximately 4.5 square miles. However, this population fluctuates greatly in the summer due to nearby beach vacation destination. Events are held in downtown Berlin most weekends during the summer. These events include food festivals, music festivals, farmers markets, and holiday events, and host thousands of attendees.
Our relatively low call volume allows the Berlin Police Department to be a community policing department first. We feel we are able to provide a better service and build a stronger connection because our department is not a high volume department. However, with two major highways that run through the Town of Berlin, we see a steady flow of traffic that can foster great success through proactive policing.

Minimum Requirements:
- Be 21 years old
- Be a U.S. citizen
- Have a high school diploma or approved GED
- Pass extensive background check to include: Psychological exam, Drug test, Criminal History check,
- Computer Voice Stress Analysis, Credit check, and Driving Record check.
- Possess a Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commission MPCTC certificate or comparable certificate from another state.
Job Description/General Duties:
- Patrols an assigned sector being alert to unusual circumstances and initiating crime prevention and community service activities.
- Investigates unusual occurrences and reports findings.
- Serves as a witness in various law courts.
- Checks businesses to prevent criminal activity and maintains order in areas where the public congregates.
- Responds to calls for service of both criminal and non-criminal nature.
- Enforces State laws and City ordinances. Prevents and detects criminal acts.
- Protects crime scenes and investigates criminal offenses.
- Transports apprehended individuals in accordance with departmental regulations.
- Enforces traffic regulations and investigates vehicular collisions;assures proper flow of traffic. Prepares reports as required.
- Provides information to the public on crime prevention techniques.
- General maintenance and care of assigned/issued equipment.
- Other duties that are not listed above but are relevant to police work and maintaining an effective police department.
Hiring Process:
The hiring process for a Certified Police Officer includes completing the application, a formal interview with an interview board, background investigation that includes a CVSA (Computer Voice Stress Analyzer), medical exam, and a psychological exam.
