School Resource Officer
The Atlantic Police Department is currently taking applications for a full time position of School Resource Officer.
This position is currently only open to Iowa Certified Police Officers. As a certified officer, this position will receive a week (40hrs) of vacation and sick time upon hire. We are also offering a 1-1 years of service match on our longevity scale (up to 5 years.) Example: 5 years of previous service will count for 5 years credit with our department. An officer with 5 years of service would receive an additional $2.60/hr on their base pay (total of $32.43/hr.) 2 years of service would receive $2/hr on their base pay (total of $31.83/hr.)

Salary:
Certified applicants base wage will start at $29.83/HR + longevity (if applicable)
Certified base wage after 6 month probation will be 30.81/HR + longevity (in applicable)
Union negotiated increase in July 2025.
City paid family YMCA membership
- $500 uniform allowance each year
- $300 city contribution to a medical flex plan each year
- Three paid personal holidays each year to be used at the officer’s discretion, with eight additional paid holidays throughout the year
- This position will have a favorable Monday-Friday schedule during the school year. They will have ability to flex time to attend school related events as well as the ability to earn comp time.
- This position will fill shifts as a regular patrolman during extended school breaks and summer months.
- This position may be supplied a take home vehicle (officer must live in the city limits of Atlantic to be eligible.)
Hiring Process:
- Applications will be accepted until December 6th.
- Oral Interviews tentatively planned for December 11th/12th.
- MMPI testing date TBD for selected candidates
- Certified applicants will not have to complete the POST-test
- If selected for further testing, candidates will be sent a second portion of the application used to perform a full background check
- Before being hired, a candidate is required to pass a drug test and have a physical evaluation
Testing Requirements:
Iowa certified applicants will not be required to complete the physical testing and will be contacted to set up a formal interview.
About the Atlantic Police Department/City of Atlantic:
- Our department operates with 12 full time officers, 4 part time officers, and 2 secretarial staff members
- This added position will bring our department to 13 full time officers
- We work a 12 hour schedule consisting of every other weekend off for most officers
- Load bearing vest are provided and facial hair and tattoos are permitted
- Atlantic has a population of approximately 7,000
- The Atlantic community, community leaders, & city administration are very supportive of our agency
- Atlantic is located an hour west of Des Moines and an hour east of Omaha

Minimum Qualifications:
- Must be a citizen of the United States
- Must be at least 18 years of age
- Must have a valid driver’s license
- Must be an ILEA certified officer
- College education is preferred but not required
- Military service will be highly considered
- Must not have any felony convictions or convictions of other crimes involving moral turpitude
